Project Title: Transition to RORO Ship Transport from Various Production Areas in Aomori Prefecture to Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture
~Vehicle Upsizing Using 3-Axle Trailers for Mainline Transportation of Brown Rice from Production Areas in Akita and Miyagi Prefectures to Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture~
Award Recipients: Suzuyo, Suzuyo Cargo Net, Yamatane, Yamatane Logistics
[Details and Effects]
For transporting brown rice from various regions in Tohoku to Chiba Prefecture, the previous method involved loose loading using 10-ton trucks from each production area directly to Chiba. However, due to inconsistent loading rates across different origins, the companies revised their transportation system by palletizing all cargo and implementing the following changes:
For transportation from Aomori Prefecture to Chiba Prefecture, the companies shifted from 10-ton trucks to 3-axle trailers and transitioned to maritime transport using RORO ships (ferry transport) between Hachinohe Port and Kawasaki Port. For transportation from Akita and Miyagi Prefectures to Chiba Prefecture, the cargo is consolidated and transferred from 10-ton trucks to 3-axle trailers at the transit hub in Sendai City before continuing onward.
As a result, the initiative achieved: - Reduction of CO2 emissions by 14.6 tons (38.8% of previous emissions) - Reduction of driver driving time by approximately 164 hours annually (30.7% of previous time) - Labor-saving in unloading operations through palletization - Halving of truck usage due to the adoption of 3-axle trailers
These outcomes simultaneously realized improved transportation efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and lighter labor burdens.
Under its corporate message, 'Supporting what continues,' the Yamatane Group is actively pursuing sustainability management, with a focus on 'promoting environmentally conscious business activities.' Moving forward, the Group will continue to contribute to building a sustainable society by actively promoting modal shift and optimizing the entire supply chain through inter-business collaboration to further reduce environmental impact and enhance logistics efficiency.
