Water resources are indispensable for all life on Earth and for all companies.

Global water resources face many challenges, including climate change, anthropogenic water withdrawal, lack of investment in infrastructure, and continental-scale desiccation. In Japan, extreme weather phenomena such as record heatwaves and heavy rains, and droughts, are becoming apparent, necessitating a review of how we approach water resources.

Stewardship means taking responsibility for something you do not own.

In the case of water stewardship, it means taking care of the finite natural resources that we all depend on. To achieve sustainable operations and solve the diversifying water challenges, it is necessary to promote water stewardship in collaboration with watershed stakeholders, not just within one's own site.

In March 2026, the updated AWS International Water Stewardship Standard Version 3.0 integrated requirements and reflected the latest sustainability trends to enhance practical applicability on site.

・Climate Change Resilience: New requirement to understand future climate trends and incorporate risk countermeasures into plans.

・Biodiversity Conservation: The element of "healthy freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity" is clearly stated, clarifying contributions to conservation and restoration.

・Impact and Dependence (Double Materiality): Identifying the impact and dependence of one's own water use is a mandatory condition for risk assessment.

・Alignment with International Standards: Improved compatibility with disclosure frameworks such as CSRD (ESRS E3) and CDP.
