[Important] New JSA Standard Issued: "Quality Standards and Test Methods for Recycled UC Oil (Used Cooking Oil)"!

The Japan Standards Association (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Hiroshi Asahi) has issued the JSA standard "JSA-S1029:2026 Recycled UC Oil" on March 30, 2026, concerning recycled oils produced from the recycling process of used cooking oil.

This JSA standard was developed primarily by Nakagawa Oil & Fat Co., Ltd. In recent years, with the aim of realizing a decarbonized society, the demand for "Recycled UC Oil (Used Cooking Oil)" as a raw material for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and biofuels has been rapidly increasing both domestically and internationally. On the other hand, ensuring appropriate quality control according to the intended use of the final product (feed, fuel, chemical products, etc.) and traceability throughout the supply chain has become an urgent issue. This standard clarifies quality standards and test methods in line with industry practices, thereby supporting smooth commercial transactions and the revitalization of the recycling business.

【Background of Establishment and Expected Effects】

Currently, used cooking oil is being re-evaluated as a valuable domestic resource. However, its quality control has been left to the individual business operators' own standards or private standards. In particular, strict GMP guidelines are required for feed use, and international certifications (ISCC) are required for biofuel use, demanding transparency in the supply chain.

This standard specifies the types and quality components according to the required level and needs of the final product, and the upper limits and reporting items for specific components based on their measurement methods, concerning quality control provisions not incorporated into the "JAS 0028" Japanese Agricultural Standard for recycling processes, which was established earlier.

The introduction of this standard is expected to objectively certify the quality of recycled oils and facilitate smoother commercial transactions with customers. Furthermore, as a standard originating from Japan, it also considers expansion into overseas markets such as the Asian region, contributing to the further expansion of the recycled oil market both domestically and internationally and the formation of a circular economy.
