Social business community "Waccel" (Location: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Organizer: Yoshihiro Shimamura, General Producer: Tomohiro Sumiya) will hold a "Drumming Exercise" on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, featuring drum & percussionist Tatsuro Ito, whom they support, as an instructor.

In recent years, as interest in self-growth and wellness has increased, more people are incorporating exercise, mindfulness, and meditation into their lives. Amidst this trend, a newly proposed program is the "Drumming Exercise," an exercise utilizing drums. Unlike conventional "lessons for improving instrument skills," this program was developed as a new form of experiential exercise that anyone can enjoy at their own pace, regardless of their musical experience.

Background of Development Typical drum lessons aim at improving technique and playing songs. However, as the level increases, the movements become complex, and it is not uncommon for people to give up halfway due to the high level of difficulty. "Can't we interact with drums in a simpler way that anyone can enjoy?" "Can we place value on 'experiencing' rather than 'can or cannot do'?" "Drumming Exercise" was born from such thoughts.

What is Drumming Exercise? Drumming Exercise is an exercise that combines rhythm and body movement while using a drum. No special skills or knowledge are required. It starts with simple movements that anyone can do, beginning with keeping time by clapping and stomping simultaneously, and gradually overlapping with the original rhythm of the drum while using both hands and feet. Its characteristic is a style that can be continued without strain while focusing on one's own senses, similar to yoga or Pilates.

Features and Value - Designed to start with what you can do Since it builds rhythm based on "what you can do right now" rather than mastering difficult movements, even beginners can participate with peace of mind. - Output-oriented experience It values expressing one's own rhythm rather than memorizing the correct answer, and creativity is naturally brought out by continuing. - Mind-body coordination Moving both hands and feet simultaneously leads to improved physical coordination and concentration.

Expected Effects By continuing Drumming Exercise, the following changes are expected: - Improvement of rhythm and physical sensation - Strengthening the coordination between head and body - Improvement of self-expression skills - Improvement of self-esteem through the accumulation of successful experiences of "I did it" The drum, which was previously perceived as "difficult," will transform into a "tool to expand yourself while having fun."

Comments from Previous Participants - When I experienced it for the first time, I was taught gently and carefully, and I realized that I could do it too. After that, I started individual lessons with the aim of acquiring the sense of rhythm necessary for dancing and singing. (Female voice actress/actor in her 20s)

- I have no sense of rhythm and didn't think I'd be able to play an instrument, so I was surprised that I got the hang of it in about 30 minutes! Learning through physical experience was very refreshing, and thank you for teaching me how to practice even without an instrument. (Male executive in his 30s)

- Going into a studio with an actual acoustic drum set and making such a loud noise is something you can't do in normal everyday life or work, so I definitely want people who haven't tried it yet to experience it! Also, it's really important to experience a "world that isn't just about working" by having fun and laughing together while interacting with many people. (Female dental hygienist in her 40s)

Developer's Comment "It's cool if you can play the drums!! But you need practice to get good." Nothing beats this if you aspire to pursue music. However, it is inherently freer and something anyone can enjoy. In Drumming Exercise, we place value on the "experience" rather than technique. We believe that the very process of gradually becoming able to do what you couldn't do before leads to confidence and potential. We hope that through this exercise, many people will discover a new side of themselves.

Future Prospects Currently, it is conducted in a format where participants take turns experiencing the exercise using a single drum set, but we are looking into establishing a dedicated studio in the future. By arranging multiple drum sets and creating an environment where participants can share rhythms simultaneously, we will create a new exercise space that generates group unity and communication, going beyond individual experiences. Furthermore, by leveraging the characteristics of Drumming Exercise, "starting from what you can do" and "accumulating successful experiences," we hope to contribute to the development and growth support of people with disabilities and youth from various backgrounds. We will continue to expand our activities so that experiences through rhythm can become an opportunity for self-expression, recovery of confidence, and building connections with society.
