The AI-equipped thinking tank 'Fuchikoma' from 'Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL' is artistically rendered on the watch dial using 'raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay,' a traditional Japanese craft that utilizes the iridescent nacre layer of seashells.

The design faithfully recreates the front view of Fuchikoma, incorporating intricate details such as wheels and arms into various components of the timepiece.

Inspired by the concept of 'Shell' (meaning 'prosthetic body') in the title, the brand adopted 'raden' craftsmanship, known for the mystical shimmer of seashells, to symbolize the fusion of humanity and technology.

Each dial is meticulously hand-finished by skilled artisans, allowing the radiant beauty of raden to shift with the angle of light. No two dials are identical—each watch is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Use of Traditional Craft: Raden Inlay

'Raden' is a traditional Japanese technique in which the iridescent parts of abalone and other seashells are shaved to extreme thinness and then inlaid into lacquered surfaces. In Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, this craft has long been known as 'Seibai-nuri' (blue-shell lacquer), as the black lacquer appears blue when seen through the thin shell. It has been passed down as a hallmark of Takaoka lacquerware.

As raden uses natural materials, each piece displays a unique luster inherent to the shell, ensuring no two are alike.

This timepiece employs the raden technique, with each dial carefully handcrafted by artisans.

Takeru Musashigawa, 4th Generation of Musashigawa Workshop, Carrier of Takaoka Lacquerware

Takaoka lacquerware originated in 1609 when Maeda Toshinaga, lord of the Kaga Domain, founded the city of Takaoka and encouraged the production of household goods. It has since been preserved as a nationally recognized traditional craft.

Founded in 1910, Musashigawa Workshop has inherited these traditional techniques across generations. The 4th generation, Takeru Musashigawa, is an emerging traditional craftsman who actively reinterprets traditional patterns in modern ways and experiments with combining raden inlay with casual products.

For this project, Musashigawa collaborated to express Fuchikoma’s design on the dial using advanced raden techniques. The intricate use of numerous small parts makes this one of the most technically demanding designs Musashigawa has ever undertaken. By manually assembling thin shell pieces to recreate the character’s detailed patterns, a unique timepiece has been born where tradition and modern design harmonize.

It is said that works born from natural materials and artisan craftsmanship retain their beauty for over 100 years.

Raden Dial Manufacturing Process

- Polishing: Seashells are cut and polished to approximately 0.1 mm in thickness. - Coloring: The backside of the polished shell’s iridescent surface is colored. - Cutting: Pieces are finely cut according to the design. - Lacquer Application: The base dial is coated with lacquer. - Decoration: 'Nikawa' (animal glue) is applied to the lacquered dial, and the cut pieces are hand-assembled. - Completion: A final coating is applied, completing each meticulously hand-finished dial.
