Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "Tokyo Gas") announces that cumulative shipments and transportation volume of LNG (liquefied natural gas) delivered by tanker trucks to customers surpassed 10 million tons in February of this year.

In 1969, Tokyo Gas imported LNG for the first time in Japan, and in the following year, 1970, began the nation's first LNG transportation by tanker trucks. Since then, the company has supported the widespread adoption of city gas by supplying neighboring gas utilities. Starting in the 2000s, amid growing environmental awareness, Tokyo Gas intensified its efforts to promote fuel switching for industrial customers, leading to a significant increase in supply volume. Today, the company has grown into one of Japan’s largest LNG supply infrastructures, shipping approximately 550,000 tons annually [*1]—equivalent to the annual gas consumption of about 1.5 million households [*2].

LNG Tanker Trucks and Cumulative LNG Satellite Tanker Shipment Volumes

Over the past half-century, Tokyo Gas, together with its partner companies, has developed a comprehensive value chain—including construction of LNG satellite facilities, year-round LNG shipment systems, and a nationwide delivery network of approximately 200 tanker trucks, the largest fleet in Japan—supporting Japan’s manufacturing industries and daily life. Under rigorous daily safety management, these tanker trucks have cumulatively traveled approximately 200 million kilometers—equivalent to circling the Earth about 5,000 times.

Looking ahead, Tokyo Gas will continue to strengthen collaboration with partner companies, respond to evolving logistics environments and decarbonization trends, advance solutions that support customers’ decarbonization and energy efficiency, and work toward stable natural gas supply.
