[TIFFANY & CO.] Announces 'Legendary Birds: The Sapphire Edition' Celebrating the Iconic 'Bird on a Rock'

Tiffany & Co. announces the unveiling of a unique high jewelry creation, 'Legendary Birds: The Sapphire Edition.'

Since its debut in 1965, 'Bird on a Rock' has been a source of inspiration, symbolizing the brand's creativity. Tiffany & Co. honors this enduring legacy by creating a unique 'Legendary Birds' piece each year. This year, this iconic motif has been elevated to new heights as a specially crafted high jewelry masterpiece.

"With this piece, we wanted to express the constant cycle of renewal in nature, where subtle movements and understated details are revealed only through careful observation. The birds gracefully hover above a floral composition blooming with crocuses and orchids, reminiscent of the flowers at the center of the world's smallest bird, the hummingbird, drawn to the sapphire pistils," says Nathalie Verdeille, Senior Vice President and Chief Artistic Officer of Jewelry and High Jewelry at Tiffany & Co.

Conceived by Nathalie Verdeille in collaboration with the Tiffany Design Studio, this creation is a tribute to Tiffany & Co.'s legacy built on exceptional design and meticulous craftsmanship. It expresses a sophisticated composition, combining black opal doublets, sapphires, pearls, mother-of-pearl, diamonds, and rubies in an unexpected harmony. Handcrafted by Tiffany & Co. high jewelry artisans using 18K yellow gold and platinum, the centerpiece is a 34.48-carat unheated oval sapphire from Madagascar.

Surrounding the center stone are the 'Bird on a Rock' motif and designs inspired by flowers. Custom-cut, ultra-thin black opal doublets and mother-of-pearl are bezel-set to create rich depth and dimension. The floral motif draws inspiration from the orchid motifs frequently used in Tiffany & Co.'s Fabrilite glass lamps of the early 20th century. Delicate inlays of diamonds and mother-of-pearl on the bird's feathers create a vibrant, lifelike contrast. Each layer of black opal doublet is precisely cut and bezel-set, achieving a sculptural and three-dimensional silhouette that requires exceptional skill.
