Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) announced that the initial version of its open source SoDeV reference platform for software-defined vehicles (SDVs) is now available through the latest AGL Unified Code Base release, “Ultimate Unagi.” The platform enables software-first development decoupled from hardware constraints. AGL SoDeV combines the AGL Unified Code Base (UCB), Linux containers, VirtIO, the Xen hypervisor, Zephyr RTOS, and other Linux Foundation projects into a single integrated package that can run on automotive SoCs, virtual machines, and cloud environments. With SoDeV, automakers and suppliers can begin software development before final hardware is ready, helping shorten time to market for SDVs. AGL also welcomed five new members: EMQ, Lineo Solutions, MediaTek, VA Linux Systems Japan, and Very Good Ventures. Their participation reflects the automotive industry’s accelerating shift toward software-centric vehicle architectures, with open source collaboration at the center of that transformation. Dan Cauchy, Executive Director of Automotive Grade Linux, said AGL is pleased to welcome the new members, each bringing unique and valuable expertise. He noted that the growing ecosystem around the SoDeV reference platform reflects the breadth of innovation enabled by open source collaboration. The Ultimate Unagi release includes initial SoDeV support, allowing developers to build and test SDV systems on the Renesas Sparrow Hawk reference board and cloud-based processor environments. It also updates to Yocto Project Scarthgap LTS 5.0.16 for improved stability and build reproducibility, and includes updates to the Flutter Embedder, Workspace Automation tools, Vehicle Signal Specification (VSS), and the gRPC-based Distributed Display Framework. Ultimate Unagi will be supported for the next two years, with updates planned approximately three weeks after each Yocto Project Scarthgap release. AGL also announced that its next AGL All Member Meeting Europe will take place in Berlin on September 30 and October 1, 2026. The call for proposals is now open, with submissions due by July 12. The event will bring together automakers, suppliers, and open source contributors for technical sessions, working group meetings, and community collaboration to advance the AGL technical roadmap and share insights on SDV adoption.
