Background of Mobility Data Integration Platform Introduction

In Aomori City, with a shortage of route bus drivers, there was a need to rationalize routes without impairing convenience. Amidst this need for route rationalization, when revising timetables or reorganizing routes, mobility data was not being fully utilized, leading to discrepancies between demand and reality, and perception versus fact. Furthermore, there was no mechanism to swiftly and accurately evaluate measures after timetable revisions or route reorganizations. A data platform was sought to enable common understanding and discussions among traffic-related stakeholders, including the evaluation of measures.

Mobility Data Integration Platform

SWAT Mobility has begun providing a mobility data integration platform that integrates ridership data and operational plan data for route buses, municipal buses (community buses), and on-demand transport operating in Aomori City, enabling analysis combined with population distribution and human flow data. This platform allows for multi-faceted data analysis, considering routes, lines, services, and fare types for each public transport system, with a single click. It also has a function to visualize ridership data on a map, making it easy for anyone to identify operational challenges and propose timetable revisions. Furthermore, to resolve timetable disruptions due to bus delays in winter, a unique challenge for Aomori City, a heavy snowfall area, delay status by route was newly visualized. This allows for the creation of timetables based on delay status data obtained from winter bus operations, leading to improved convenience for citizens.

In addition, a mechanism to visualize public transport coverage by time slot was constructed. This makes it possible to accurately grasp public transport coverage according to the operating frequency of each public transport system at different times of the day.

In addition to providing the mobility data integration platform, proposals and implementation of measures based on data analysis tailored to Aomori City's challenges were carried out (see below).

Acquisition of Municipal Bus OD Data by AI Camera

Aomori City's municipal buses could only acquire IC card data, making it impossible to grasp the movements of passengers using cash or other methods. It is estimated that the breakdown of cash usage is approximately 50%, and to understand this usage situation, AI cameras were installed to grasp the actual usage of cash users. New development was carried out to allow the acquired data to be assigned various IDs using GTFS by applying the same data processing logic as existing ridership data (IC card, fare box), making data integration into this platform easy.

User Support

To widely share the results of data analysis utilizing mobility data with citizens, public relations materials were created. The route network of Aomori City municipal buses and other city buses is visualized on a map, clearly explaining that Aomori City's route buses feature a 'T-shaped' route extending east-west and south from Aomori Station, strengthening access to major areas from the city center, and achieving smooth movement with reduced waiting times by maintaining high operating frequencies.

Consideration of Introduction Candidate Areas and Introduction Simulation for AI On-demand Transport

Regarding demand transport operating in the western district of Aomori City, consideration was given to expanding the operating area. For candidate areas where new introduction is envisioned, movement demand analysis based on human flow data and route bus movement demand were analyzed to verify whether on-demand transport could be a substitute.
