This recognition highlights initiatives that combine maritime modal shift with land transport to achieve reduced environmental impact, lower operational burdens, and improved logistics efficiency.
※The award was newly established by integrating and evolving the former 'Logistics Environmental Award' and 'Modal Shift Outstanding Operator Award.' It now broadly honors outstanding efforts toward sustainable logistics, including environmental load reduction, modal shift, inter-organizational collaboration, advanced technology utilization, and contributions to work-style reforms.
Award-Winning Projects Overview
Project 1
Title: Transition to RORO Ship Transport from Various Production Sites in Aomori Prefecture to Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture
— Vehicle upsizing using 3-axle trailers for brown rice trunk transport from Akita and Miyagi Prefectures to Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture —
Recipients: Suzuyo, Suzuyo Cargo Net, Yamatane, Yamatane Logistics
Description: Previously, brown rice from various regions in Tohoku to Chiba Prefecture was transported by 10-ton trucks via direct land transport, resulting in inconsistent loading rates by origin. The companies restructured the transport system by palletizing all cargo and implementing the following changes:
- Aomori Prefecture → Chiba Prefecture: Shift from 10-ton trucks to 3-axle trailers, and transition from land to maritime transport via RORO (Roll-on/Roll-off) ferry service between Hachinohe Port and Kawasaki Port
- Akita Prefecture & Miyagi Prefecture → Chiba Prefecture: Consolidate cargo in Sendai City by transferring from 10-ton trucks to 3-axle trailers before onward transport
This initiative simultaneously achieved improved transport efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and lower labor burdens.
Results:
- CO₂ emissions reduced by 14.6 tons (38.8%)
- Driver driving time reduced by approximately 164 hours (30.7%)
- Labor-saving in unloading operations due to palletization
- Halved number of vehicles used through 3-axle trailer adoption
Project 2
Title: Reducing Vehicle Allocation and Implementing RORO-Based Modal Shift through Lot-Up in Trailer Transport — Sakura City, Iwaki City to Matsubara City Route —
Recipients: Suzuyo, Suzuyo Cargo Net, Oji Paper, DAI Logistics
Description: For paper product shipments from Fukushima and Tochigi Prefectures to Osaka Prefecture, the companies shifted from traditional 10-ton truck land transport to larger lot shipments using trailers, significantly reducing the number of vehicles required. Additionally, by switching the Tokyo Port to Osaka Port leg to RORO ferry transport (maritime modal shift), they drastically shortened truck travel distances, achieving simultaneous reductions in CO₂ emissions and driver working hours. In the Kansai region, where many delivery points cannot accommodate trailers, a warehouse in Matsubara City, Osaka Prefecture, was used as a stockpoint to consolidate inventory and restructure the distribution network. This enabled a transport system that balances efficiency with last-mile delivery flexibility.
Results:
- CO₂ emissions reduced by 83.2 tons
- 123 fewer vehicles deployed
- Driver driving time reduced by 837 hours
Suzuyo and Suzuyo Cargo Net will continue collaborating with clients to solve logistics challenges and contribute to the realization of sustainable and efficient logistics.
