Background of Collaboration: To Expand Recognition and Market Development for Portuguese Food
Portugal is a country with a food culture deeply rooted in using a lot of seafood and rice, and highlighting the natural flavors of ingredients. These characteristics have many commonalities with Japanese food culture and possess elements that are easily familiar to Japanese people. On the other hand, opportunities to experience Portuguese food and culture within Japan are still limited, and their appeal is not yet fully known.
SFA focused on the potential of Portuguese food and signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) in October 2026 with PortugalFoods, an industry association that promotes the international expansion and competitiveness of Portugal's food and beverage industry.
PortugalFoods is a private non-profit organization with over 180 participating organizations, including not only food manufacturers but also universities and research and development institutions. It promotes the improvement of competitiveness and international expansion of the entire Portuguese agri-food industry, and its activities are highly regarded by the Portuguese government, having been officially recognized as a leader of the agri-food cluster.
Furthermore, Portugal has a long-standing culture of processed seafood products, with advanced preservation and processing technologies, including canning. In recent years, interest in sustainable fishing and resource management has also been growing.
This MOU aims to promote the development of the food and beverage industries in Portugal and Japan, and establishes a cooperative relationship in areas such as information dissemination, market information sharing, promotion of exchange among industry stakeholders, creation of training opportunities, and promotion of innovation in the agri-food sector. This POP UP is being implemented as the first demonstration project based on this cooperative relationship.
Future Outlook: Promoting Initiatives to Connect Overseas Food with the Japanese Market
This POP UP is the first step in expanding recognition of Portuguese food and exploring its potential in the Japanese market. SFA has been collaborating with domestic and international companies to implement initiatives that bring new food possibilities into society.
Moving forward, while utilizing the Sustainable Food Museum, we will continue to promote initiatives that connect overseas food companies and related organizations with the Japanese market, and create opportunities to broaden the diversity of food. Through encounters with various food cultures and products, we will contribute to building a sustainable and prosperous food future.
<Initiatives for Market Verification Utilizing Sustainable Food Museum>
The Sustainable Food Museum operates as a venue for creating encounters with new food cultures and products, starting with sustainable food. This POP UP is also part of these initiatives, implemented as a demonstration project for the Japanese market. It goes beyond simple product sales to verify potential in the Japanese market through actual contact with consumers.
The visitor survey will collect data on satisfaction with dishes and products, purchase intent, and price range, visualizing demand in the Japanese market.
