[S-PAL Sendai] Achieving Carbon Neutrality in Electricity Usage [JR Sendai East Gate Building] Introduction of Off-site Corporate PPA via Hydroelectric Power - Initiatives for a Sustainable Future: Toward Realizing Carbon Neutrality by 2050

Sendai Terminal Building Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Sendai City; President: Tetsushiro Matsuzaki), as part of the JR East Group's 'Zero Carbon Challenge 2050' initiative aiming for net-zero CO₂ emissions by fiscal year 2050, will implement carbon neutrality for the electricity used at S-PAL Sendai (Location: 1-1-1 Chuo, Aoba-ku, Sendai City) starting April 1, 2026. ◆ Overview Starting in fiscal year 2026, Sendai Terminal Building will achieve carbon neutrality (effectively 100% decarbonization) for the electricity used at S-PAL Sendai by utilizing environmental value certificates. By combining 'J-Credits derived from renewable energy (*1),' 'Green Power Certificates (*2),' and 'Non-Fossil Certificates (*3),' we will reduce the CO₂ emissions associated with our electricity usage to effectively zero, promoting the realization of carbon neutrality. Furthermore, we will implement a 'power recycling loop' by introducing eco-friendly electricity derived from food waste generated at S-PAL Sendai (*4). Through these initiatives, we expect to reduce the electricity-derived CO₂ emissions, which amounted to approximately 7,500 t-CO₂ based on fiscal year 2024 usage, to effectively zero. We will continue to promote the adoption of cleaner, sustainable energy and work steadily toward the realization of a decarbonized society. *1 A system where the government certifies CO₂ emission reductions achieved through the introduction of renewable energy such as solar, wind, and biomass as 'credits.' *2 A system that allows the 'environmental value' of electricity generated from renewable sources like solar and wind to be traded as certificates, certified by the Japan Quality Assurance Organization (JQA). *3 Certificates that prove the 'environmental value' of electricity generated without fossil fuels, such as renewable energy or nuclear power. ◆ About the Power Recycling Loop The JR East Group launched a 'power recycling loop' in April 2024, which converts food waste from station buildings and 'Ekinaka' (inside-station) facilities into biogas to generate renewable energy for use within group facilities. In July of the same year, JR Fruit Park Sendai Arahama, operated by our company, began using this eco-friendly electricity derived from food waste. Additionally, S-PAL Sendai has been outsourcing food waste processing to Tohoku Bio Food Recycle Co., Ltd. to engage in food waste recycling. We will begin using a portion of this biogas-generated electricity at S-PAL Sendai in July 2025 and will expand the usage area in April 2026. We will continue to actively introduce eco-friendly electricity derived from food waste generated at S-PAL Sendai and contribute to the realization of a circular society through the promotion of this power recycling loop.
