Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1797-1861) was a ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period. Known as a "visionary artist" for his warrior prints, his love for cats, and his abundant satire and humor, he also displayed a multifaceted talent, creating charming and lively beauties, accurate and popular actors, and innovative landscapes incorporating Western painting techniques. He dedicated himself to entertaining the people of Edo, just like himself, and his ability to produce first-class works in any genre made him a true super creator of the ukiyo-e world!
This exhibition will showcase approximately 200 works, divided into six genres, that fully demonstrate his rare talent, including famous pieces such as "The Old Tale of the Loyal Retainers of Soma," "He Looks Fierce But Is Actually a Good Person," and "The Fifty-three Stations of the Cat Fancy." The exhibition will clearly present Kuniyoshi's diverse activities. Alongside Kuniyoshi's world, we will introduce highlights with commentary that allows visitors to feel his personality while also experiencing the lives of people at the time. Kuniyoshi's supreme entertainment is sure to captivate and delight our hearts, just as it did the Edoites of his era!
