Ginza Sony Park grand opened on January 26, 2025, at a corner of the Ginza-Sukiyabashi intersection.

Why did Sony create a "park" in this location? This document records the reflections and practices over approximately 12 years, from the decision-making process leading to the Sony Building's redevelopment, to the experiment of opening the building to the city during its demolition, and the design philosophy and construction derived from it, up to the grand opening. It is not only the story of a building, but also a record of the challenges faced in grappling with the question of how to embody Sony's spirit of "being unique" and "doing what others don't" in the current era.

Ginza Sony Park is a "park in the city" at the Ginza-Sukiyabashi intersection in Tokyo's Ginza district. It inherits the philosophy of the Sony Building, which valued being "a facility open to the city." It is composed of a "blank space" created within the city and the diverse "activities" that spread from it, aiming to be a place where people can casually stop by without a specific purpose and spend their time as they wish, while also encountering new discoveries and experiences with each visit—a place open to the everyday life of the city.

You can see the full picture of the 12-year project, including the challenges and creativity unfolded within Sony to realize Ginza Sony Park, along with actual discussion materials and interviews with project members.

When the project was launched in 2013, by deciphering the history of the Sony Building and the Ginza district from surviving documents and blueprints of the time, we were able to understand what founder Akio Morita and designer Yoshinobu Ashihara were thinking and what they entrusted to the future.

Ginza Sony Park is built upon a timeless dialogue with the philosophies of these two individuals, Morita and Ashihara. We want to pass on their ideas to the next generation, who will likely face redevelopment again in 50 years, just as we did. With this in mind, we have compiled our efforts into a single book.

We hope it will become a place for someone, someday, to return to.
