Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. (Representative Director and President: Koji Ishikawa, hereinafter "Sompo Japan") is launching the "HIKESHI DNA 2030 Project" to strengthen its initiatives in disaster prevention and mitigation, aiming to "realize a disaster-resilient regional society where everyone can live with peace of mind."

## 1. Background and Project Objectives

Sompo Japan's predecessor, Tokyo Fire Insurance Company, was founded in 1888 as Japan's first fire insurance company. While an insurance company, it formed the "Tokyo Fire Brigade," the only private fire brigade officially recognized by the Metropolitan Police Department at the time, and when fires occurred, its members rushed to the scene with their hands, risking their lives to protect customers and the community.

In recent years, natural disasters have become more frequent and severe, and the environment and rules surrounding the non-life insurance industry have also changed significantly. To respond to these changes and become a company truly chosen by customers, Sompo Japan has redefined the "spirit of firefighting" passed down since its founding as "HIKESHI DNA," and as modern-day "HIKESHI," it aims to elevate disaster prevention and mitigation into a new culture rooted in Japan.

Mamori Mark: This is a logo mark symbolizing this project, featuring a red Hinomaru (Japanese flag) as a declaration of commitment to protect people's lives [宀 (house)] with our hands [寸 (hand)], and furthermore, to protect not only our own company but also the development of the non-life insurance industry and "Japan's future."

## 2. Project Overview

In this project, "HIKESHI" is defined as "protecting people's lives, happiness, and corporate activities from intensifying natural disasters in all phases – before, during, and after a disaster – with the DNA of firefighting in mind." The following initiatives will be promoted:

### (1) Provision of Products and Services

We will provide products and services that offer peace of mind to customers in all phases – before, during, and after a disaster – from preparations to prevent disasters, to prompt initial response and insurance payouts immediately after a disaster, and reconstruction of lost daily lives and businesses.

### (2) Initiatives to Improve Regional Resilience

Based on strong ties with local governments, fire departments/volunteer fire brigades, regional financial institutions, and various companies/agents, we will collaborate with numerous partners to contribute to improving regional resilience. This includes disseminating disaster prevention information using data and AI, improving disaster prevention literacy starting from regional issue-solving activities such as the Bousai Japanda Project, and strengthening collaboration with fire departments/volunteer fire brigades to connect "self-help," "mutual aid," and "public assistance."

Bousai Japanda Project: This is an experiential disaster prevention workshop for children and their guardians, aimed at helping them acquire knowledge and safe actions to protect themselves from disasters. Examples include creating a handmade "escape map" in the Sompo style, where participants color-code the time it takes to reach their target evacuation point on a map of their residential area.
