SkyMatix Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Zentaro Watanabe) has released a new "Differential Earth Volume Measurement" feature for its spatial data integration platform "KUMIKI," which compares current terrain with design data and visualizes the movement of earth (*1).
(*1) Instantly calculates the amount of cut and fill.
With this feature, earth volume calculation can be easily completed by simply operating "KUMIKI" on a PC browser in the office or on-site. Furthermore, AI automatically identifies and removes construction machinery that affects measurement accuracy, and it supports on-demand output in LandXML format. This makes it possible for anyone to immediately perform highly accurate earth volume analysis that can be used directly in practical work.
Overturning the Norms of Construction Sites: The Overwhelming Difference from Conventional Methods
Until now, accurately calculating earth volume by comparing the "current state" of the site with design data faced high physical and technical barriers.
Conventional Method: Point cloud data of the current situation was generated from photogrammetry, on-site surveying, or laser surveying. Then, noise such as construction machinery had to be manually removed one by one using expensive specialized analysis software, and then compared with design data to calculate the differential earth volume. As a result, it took several days to a week from analysis until the data was ready for use on-site.
Next-Generation Standard with "KUMIKI": KUMIKI completes all these processes in the cloud. By simply accessing it from a browser on a typical mobile PC, AI automatically and instantly removes construction machinery noise, compares it with design data, and even outputs it in the industry-standard format (LandXML) in just a few minutes.
Advanced earth volume analysis, which was previously dependent on a few specialists, evolves into an everyday tool for all personnel involved in the field.
Two Support Functions for More Precise Analysis
This update simultaneously implements functions that enhance the accuracy of earth volume calculation and its applicability to practical work.
1) Automatic removal of construction machinery on the 3D viewer
During earth volume calculation, construction machinery operating on-site is recognized as "unnecessary earth volume (noise)" and distorts measurement accuracy. This function automatically identifies and removes only construction machinery from the data using AI. This enables earth volume calculation based on accurate ground elevation, significantly reducing the enormous effort required for data correction, rework due to inaccurate data-based on-site judgments, and additional costs incurred by extra work.
2) LandXML on-demand output
Terrain data with construction machinery noise removed is immediately generated in LandXML format, the industry standard for the construction industry. Furthermore, since it can be output directly from a PC, rapid data linkage to ICT construction machinery and the creation of deliverables are dramatically streamlined. Work that previously required external software can now be completed with "KUMIKI" alone.
"KUMIKI" Continues to Provide Overwhelming Operability
Since its release, "KUMIKI" has pursued easy and simple operability that does not require high-spec dedicated PCs or advanced specialized skills. Thanks to its unique cloud analysis engine, the advanced analysis functions implemented this time also operate smoothly on your everyday mobile PC browser. It is possible to transform all spatial data into a practical tool, overcoming location and equipment constraints, whether in a site prefab, office, or even inside a moving vehicle.

Comment from Zentaro Watanabe, Representative Director and President, SkyMatix Inc.
"SkyMatix aims to make it commonplace for all people involved in the field, not just a few specialists, to accurately and instantly grasp 'what is happening now.' This update eliminates on-site noise that hinders analysis accuracy and evolves practical-level digital twins from special technology to everyday tools. We will lead Japanese construction sites to the next generation standard by transforming construction uncertainty into certainty through the power of spatial analysis technology."
