MET Live in HD brings the latest stage productions from The Metropolitan Opera—one of the world's leading opera houses located in New York—to movie theaters across Japan.
From the current "MET Live in HD 2025–26 Season," the new opera "Frida y Diego: The Last Dream," inspired by the real-life Mexican artist couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, composed by Gabriela Lena Frank with libretto by Nilo Cruz, will be shown in theaters nationwide from July 10 (Fri) to July 16 (Thu)! (Note: At Theatre East only, extended for two weeks through July 23 (Thu)).
What would you feel if a beloved person who passed away suddenly returned before your eyes?
Set on the Mexican "Day of the Dead" in 1957, the story follows Diego Rivera, three years after losing his beloved wife Frida Kahlo, who is tormented by grief and old age. Frida returns to him for just 24 hours—but she must abide by one strict rule. This production inverts the classic narrative of the opera "Orfeo ed Euridice," brought to life by a world-class creative team.
The acclaimed composer Gabriela Lena Frank, a Grammy nominee and winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Music, teams up with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. The direction and choreography are by Deborah Colker, celebrated for her work with Cirque du Soleil and the Rio Olympics closing ceremony, and winner of a Laurence Olivier Award.
The cast features MET regulars Isabel Leonard and Carlos Alvarez, among other renowned performers!
With captivating contemporary music, vibrant costumes, and mesmerizing stage design, the trailer and promotional video—packed with the essence of the stage production—are now unveiled!
The newly released trailer conveys the opera's fantastical atmosphere, rooted in Mexico's "Day of the Dead" and inspired by the story of "Orfeo ed Euridice."
