[KAMU kanazawa] Artist Yuken Teruya, who embeds social issues into his work, to unveil three new and old works marking his 30-year career starting June 16, 2026.

KAMU kanazawa (operated by setchu inc.), a contemporary art museum in Kanazawa, is launching a simultaneous exhibition of three works by Okinawan contemporary artist Yuken Teruya. Connecting his 1996 debut to his latest work, the exhibition traces his 30-year journey while overlapping with the social changes in Okinawa. Furthermore, as an embodiment of the museum's goal to create a city where art is part of daily life, the exhibition extends into the city through collaborations with local company Mitani Sangyo and pizza shops in Kanazawa.

Since his debut in 1996, Teruya has conveyed the connection between Okinawa and the world through art, marking his 30th anniversary in 2026. His career trajectory deeply overlaps with the social transformations Okinawa has faced. From 'Sweat and Sunny Day,' born in response to the 1995 base issues, to 'In the Future' (2004), which humorously captured the US military helicopter crash at Okinawa International University, his work reflects the invisible boundaries and political dynamics of our chaotic modern world. In the cloudy skies of Kanazawa, Teruya will present 'The flag for birds,' raising the sky of Okinawa as a flag.

The exhibition includes 'Sweat and Sunny Day, 1996-2026,' featuring souvenir T-shirts with military icons; 'In the Future 2004-2026,' which focuses on the helicopter crash incident; and the new project 'The flag for birds' in collaboration with Mitani Sangyo. Additionally, participating pizza shops in Kanazawa will offer takeout in pizza boxes featuring the same design as the artwork, allowing visitors to experience the background of the work through their daily meals.
