This study is the result of analyzing 700 DNA regions from oral epithelial samples of 6,752 people who underwent genetic testing in Japan, regardless of nationality or origin, and comparing them with Japanese-specific DNA patterns identified in the international '1,000 Genomes Project.' Why can ethnic composition be determined from DNA? The key lies in 'SNVs (Single Nucleotide Variants),' which are subtle differences in DNA that vary among individuals. By cross-referencing this with vast global population data, the system can calculate what percentage of one's roots come from which region.

■ The Meaning of 'Pure Japanese'
Generally, the concept of 'Japanese' refers to a group that holds Japanese nationality, speaks the Japanese language, and enjoys a common culture and customs. From a biological perspective, the prevailing theory is that Japanese genetic roots consist of a 'tripartite structure' comprising indigenous Jomon, rice-farming Yayoi, and Kofun-era East Asian lineages. At the DNA level, we are a 'hybrid' of diverse peoples who have migrated over tens of thousands of years, including those from the East Asian continent, the islands of Southeast Asia, and northern Siberia. This hybridity caused by multiple waves of migration is the true identity of modern Japanese genetic composition, and recently, multi-layered roots crossing borders through globalization have been intricately woven in. In other words, rather than 'genetically pure Japanese,' it might be more accurate to define Japanese people as those who live in the region of Japan and share a common cultural consciousness.
