Samsung Electronics (headquartered in South Korea, hereinafter 'Samsung') today announced a new technology called 'Flex Titanium' for its next-generation Samsung Galaxy foldable products. Building on seven generations of foldable technology innovation and engineering expertise, Samsung has redesigned the display structure to evolve both its construction and materials, achieving improved durability and less visible creases for a more refined viewing experience. The 'Flex Titanium' technology, which integrates Samsung's accumulated display expertise, combines two titanium components—titanium alloy film and a titanium plate—to achieve an exceptional balance of thinness, flexibility, and strength.

Sunghoon Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of HW R&D at the MX (Mobile eXperience) Division of Samsung Electronics, said, "Samsung's strength in the foldable category lies in connecting user needs with our technological capabilities to deliver tangible value in everyday life. Our next-generation Samsung Galaxy foldable products adopt innovative display technologies that elevate the user experience, centered on superior visual performance, built upon our accumulated expertise."

Evolution Based on Years of Foldable Experience

Since popularizing AMOLED displays in 2007 and advancing toward flexible form factors, Samsung has delivered numerous innovative mobile display technologies to users through its products. True value of innovative technology is only realized through continuous refinement based on real-world usage—this holds true for foldable devices as well. Through the development of seven generations of Samsung Galaxy foldable products, Samsung has listened closely to user feedback. This led to the conclusion that two key factors are essential for foldable devices: 'an immersive, large-screen viewing experience' and 'a barely noticeable crease that does not compromise durability or portability.'

Now, Samsung combines innovations in technology, materials, and mechanical engineering to further evolve the very structure of foldable displays. The culmination of this effort is 'Flex Titanium,' a new technology representing a significant leap forward in foldable display innovation. By advancing both display technology and device design in tandem, Samsung continues to lead the mobile industry and deliver a user experience unmatched by competitors.

Flex Titanium: Advancing the Next-Generation Viewing Experience

To achieve both an immersive viewing experience and everyday durability, Samsung adopted a new approach to display structural design. The goal was to balance three critical elements: strength to withstand external impacts, flexibility to endure repeated folding, and thinness for a refined design. To address these challenges, Samsung focused on titanium as the key material.

Titanium is known for its excellent strength and durability, already used in demanding environments such as satellite antennas and Mars rover wheels. However, due to its hardness, applying titanium to foldable displays—which require thinness and flexibility—demands advanced technological capabilities. Samsung addressed this challenge by developing two key components using titanium: a 'titanium alloy film' and a 'titanium plate,' leveraging its proprietary expertise.

The titanium alloy film is positioned beneath the OLED panel, providing internal support to the display. While offering 20 times the mechanical strength of conventional polymer films, it is precision-rolled to an ultra-thin thickness—about one-third the diameter of a human hair—enabling a slim display panel. Beneath this layer, a robust titanium plate serves as a flexible structural support for the display module. Using advanced hole-processing technology, the design eliminates air gaps between the module and adhesive, creating a more robust, integrated structure. Together, these components ensure stable display support when unfolded and flexible, resilient performance during repeated folding.

Furthermore, by combining a high-resolution architecture with next-generation organic materials, Samsung achieves ultra-high display resolution while reducing power consumption. This significantly improves overall power efficiency.

Kyung-Jin Yoo, Executive Vice President and Head of Product Development at the Mobile Display Business Unit of Samsung Display, said, "By applying precise micro-patterned holes to the folding area of the titanium plate, we successfully achieved both flexibility and high durability. Combining a high-resolution display structure with new materials that maximize power efficiency will further enhance the competitiveness of next-generation Samsung Galaxy foldable products."

These advancements enable a new foldable display that maximizes immersion by minimizing crease visibility while maintaining high strength, flexibility, and structural stability at an unprecedented level.

The new 'Flex Titanium' technology will be first adopted in Samsung's next-generation Samsung Galaxy foldable products. Further details will be revealed at the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22.
