Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (Bunkyo City, Tokyo / President and CEO: Tomo Shimizu), the company behind MUJI, will begin rolling out the 'Shoulder-Load-Reducing Water-Repellent 3-Way Business Bag'—designed for a wide range of scenarios from business to personal use—at MUJI stores and online starting Monday, July 20.

Ryohin Keikaku aims to provide goods and services that help organize and enrich everyday life, guided by the philosophy that 'simplicity is a value that need not feel inferior to luxury,' in pursuit of realizing 'a good-feeling life and society.'

In recent years, diverse work styles and increasing demands for mobility functionality have driven higher demand for bags that can be used seamlessly across both professional and personal settings. Responding to these lifestyle changes, this new product offers three carrying options: briefcase, shoulder bag, and backpack. It adapts to various situations such as commuting, business meetings, business trips, weekend outings, and travel, allowing users to choose the carrying method that best suits their needs. This marks the first 3-way bag in MUJI’s popular 'Shoulder-Load-Reducing' series.

Note: The included shoulder strap for use as a shoulder bag does not feature the 'shoulder-load-reducing' function.

Original Shoulder Strap with Patented Technology Reduces Shoulder Burden

Conventional backpacks often concentrate weight on the inner side of the shoulder straps, causing discomfort, pain from strap digging, and a sensation of heaviness beyond the actual load. To address this, MUJI developed an original shoulder strap structure designed to fit the entire shoulder. By thickening the outer core material to create a height difference and attaching it at an angle that follows the natural slope of the shoulder, weight is effectively distributed. This design reduces shoulder burden by approximately 40%. Additionally, a laptop storage pocket is positioned on the back panel, bringing the load’s center of gravity closer to the body for improved stability and a lighter feel.

Patent No. 6445744: Patent for backpack shoulder strap and backpack equipped with it.

3-Way Design for Versatile Use Across Scenarios

The bag can be used in three ways—briefcase, shoulder bag, or backpack—making it suitable for a wide range of scenarios from commuting and business trips to weekend outings. External pockets allow quick access to items, while the interior features multiple pockets for organizing gadgets and stationery. It also includes a dedicated laptop pocket and a strap to secure the bag to a suitcase handle, enhancing convenience during travel. The fabric uses 100% recycled nylon for the outer material and 100% recycled polyester for the lining—both sustainable materials—with water-repellent treatment applied to the outer surface.

Ryohin Keikaku will continue to develop products that utilize natural materials and reduce environmental impact, while expanding its range of goods and services in clothing, food, and housing that support the fundamentals of daily life, all in pursuit of realizing 'a good-feeling life and society.'
