Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (Bunkyo City, Tokyo / President and CEO: Satoshi Shimizu), the company behind MUJI, will begin sequentially launching 'Japanese Vintage Furniture'—restored pieces long used in households across Japan—at eight MUJI stores nationwide starting Friday, June 26, beginning with 'MUJI Toyama Favore'. Ryohin Keikaku has positioned 'promoting resource circulation' and 'providing products and services mindful of society and the natural environment' as key themes, advancing product development with a holistic view of the entire lifecycle—from raw material sourcing and manufacturing to sales and post-use.

Many Japanese households possess furniture and household items that remain unused but stored for long periods, making their effective utilization a societal challenge. Particularly with furniture, many pieces that could still be used are often discarded or abandoned without their value being fully realized. Furniture that has been carefully used over many years develops unique patinas and characteristics. MUJI treats each piece as a one-of-a-kind item, maintaining its individuality after professional maintenance and restoration.

Unique Character of One-of-a-Kind Vintage Furniture

Furniture used over many years acquires distinct appearances through age-related color changes, scratches, and repair marks. Even pieces with identical specifications or shapes vary in condition, each possessing its own inherent value.

Ryohin Keikaku views these marks not as mere wear and tear, but as evidence of long-term use, preserving and celebrating their individuality in sales.

Restoration for Everyday Living

All vintage furniture is maintained and repaired at Ryohin Keikaku’s facilities. Unlike standard new products, which follow uniform quality standards, these pieces are assessed using unique criteria tailored to vintage furniture, ensuring they are functional and suitable for daily life. While functionality is verified, excessive restoration is avoided to preserve as much of the natural aging character as possible.

Integrating Heritage into Modern Living

The 'Japanese Vintage Furniture' series primarily features items collected from traditional Japanese homes (minka) and other sources, each carrying the history of past lifestyles. Rather than simply reusing these items, MUJI aims to integrate them meaningfully into contemporary lifestyles that evolve with the times.

Furthermore, instead of producing new goods requiring additional resources, this initiative promotes resource circulation by reusing existing furniture. By creating systems that pass items on rather than discarding them, MUJI aims to contribute to a sustainable society.
