RestPass Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture; CEO: Takuro Isoya) has been conducting a small-scale pilot program for its toilet-sharing app "Restpass," aimed at resolving the issue of long queues for women's restrooms by maximizing the use of idle toilet spots as community infrastructure. The initial phase began on April 24, 2026, in Osaka Umeda at the Hankyu Hanshin Holdings Group Building, and in Tokyo's Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Oimachi areas. Having confirmed the stability of the system and operations through this pilot program, we have decided to expand the scope of the pilot program to include general users starting July 1, 2026. This app will be provided in a pre-release version and marks our first pilot program since the company's establishment. Through this experiment, we aim to improve users' restroom experiences and utilize the data gathered to explore solutions for various social issues originating from restroom facilities.
Background and Challenges
Japan is known as the "world's leading toilet nation," yet the maintenance and management of public restrooms incur significant costs. In Tokyo alone, cases exceeding 50 million yen in annual expenses have been observed.
The reality is that issues of congestion, security, and hygiene remain unresolved in all restrooms.
According to a survey by the Japan National Tourism Organization, "securing clean restrooms" ranks second among the needs of foreign tourists visiting Japanese tourist destinations, making improvements an urgent priority.
Severe congestion, particularly in tourist areas and urban centers, not only hinders tourists but also disrupts the daily use of restrooms by local residents and business travelers in transit, leading to a decline in urban functionality and increased stress.
On the other hand, restrooms in commercial establishments incur cleaning and management costs but currently yield no economic return.
Restpass is a new service designed to address these challenges.
What is the Toilet Sharing Platform "Restpass"?
Restpass is a sharing service that networks existing toilet resources to solve the "toilet problem" when people are out and about. Through the app, users can search for and reserve nearby toilet spots, allowing them to avoid crowds and feel secure regarding safety and hygiene.

CEO's Comment
"Japan's restrooms boast the world's highest quality. However, the cost of maintaining that quality is borne entirely by corporations, local governments, and businesses. Restpass views restrooms as subjects of the sharing economy and proposes a new system that enriches users, establishments, and the entire city. Building on the insights gained from this initial pilot program, we are now expanding the scope to include general users. We will earnestly verify how much this idea is needed by society, together with a wider audience."
