Ragzasu Corporation (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Osaka City/Official Representative President: Seijiro Fukushige, hereinafter referred to as the Company) provides a used car purchase service 'Carnext'. The company conducted a survey targeting 2,281 men and women aged 40-59 with parents aged 65 and over, regarding 'the status of parents' car ownership and the situation of family discussions'.
Survey Background
In households where parents own a car even as they age, while cars are necessary for daily transportation, there are times when the frequency of use or how to handle them in the future needs to be reviewed due to changes in age or living environment.
However, regarding parents' cars, it is a topic that is difficult to bring up within the family due to the parents' intentions or the necessity of their lives, and it is easy to postpone the timing of deciding on a policy.
Therefore, Carnext conducted a survey on the status of parents' car ownership, changes in usage frequency, and the situation of family discussions regarding how to handle them in the future, targeting men and women aged 40-59 with parents aged 65 and over.
Survey Summary
・Among 2,281 men and women aged 40-59 with parents aged 65 and over, 59.7% answered that 'their parents own a private car'
・Among those who own a private car and are aware of and involved in their parents' car, 40.2% answered that 'the frequency of using their parents' car has decreased compared to before'
・Regarding the future of parents' cars, 79.5% of families have 'not decided on a policy'
59.7% of people with parents aged 65 and over answered that 'their parents own a private car'
When asked about the status of private car ownership by parents aged 65 and over to 2,281 men and women aged 40-59, 59.7% answered 'owning'. In terms of numbers, this is 1,361 people, and it was found that approximately 60% of people with parents aged 65 and over currently own a private car.
On the other hand, 'not owning' was 31.6%, and 'previously owned but currently do not own' was 7.9%. While there are a certain number of parents who do not currently own a car, it can be seen that there are still quite a few elderly parents who currently own a private car.
Parents' cars are a means of daily transportation, but due to changes in age or living environment, there are opportunities to consider their usage status or how to handle them in the future. The ownership of cars by elderly parents is considered to be one of the topics that both the parents and the child generation should be aware of.
40.2% feel that the frequency of using their parents' car has decreased compared to before
When asked about the frequency of using their parents' car to 1,023 men and women aged 40-59 who own a private car and are aware of and involved in their parents' car, 'the frequency has significantly decreased compared to before' was 13.88%, and 'the frequency has slightly decreased compared to before' was 26.3%, totaling 40.2% who answered that the frequency of using their parents' car has decreased compared to before.
On the other hand, 'it has not changed much from before' was the most at 45.94%, and 'it has increased compared to before' was only 1.17%. Additionally, 'it has not been used much from the beginning' was 9.58%, indicating that there are differences in the frequency of using parents' cars from household to household.
Even when parents own a car, there are a certain number of people in the child generation who feel that the frequency of use has decreased compared to before. It is considered that confirming whether parents' cars are being used as before, in light of changes in age or living environment, can be one opportunity to consider how to handle them in the future.
79.5% of families have 'not decided on a policy' regarding the future of their parents' car
When asked if they have discussed the future of their parents' car within the family, only 17.4% answered that they have 'specifically discussed and decided on a policy'. On the other hand, 'they have discussed but have not decided on a policy' was 18.87%, and 'they have slightly touched on the topic' was 27.66%.
Additionally, 'they have not discussed but feel the necessity' was 20.43%, and 'they have not discussed and do not feel the necessity' was 12.51%. Those who have 'not decided on a policy' totaled 79.5%, indicating that there are many cases where specific directions have not been decided within the family regarding the future of parents' cars.
Even for the child generation who are aware of and involved in, or are concerned about, their parents' car, it is considered that many people have not progressed to the point of actually discussing the future handling and deciding on a policy. Regarding elderly parents' cars, it seems that there is a need for a trigger to discuss not only the daily usage status but also the future ownership or how to dispose of them within the family.

Carnext Staff Comments
In this survey, approximately 60% of men and women aged 40-59 with parents aged 65 and over answered that 'their parents own a private car'. While parents' cars are related to daily activities such as shopping and medical appointments, there are times when the frequency of use or how to handle them in the future needs to be reviewed due to changes in age or living environment.
However, despite 40.2% of people feeling that 'the frequency of using their parents' car has decreased compared to before', 79.5% of families have not decided on a policy regarding the future of their parents' car. It is considered that while families feel the necessity, it is difficult to bring up the topic due to the direct connection to the parents' lives, making it difficult to progress to specific discussions.
Regarding parents' cars, it is important to first confirm the usage status or future intentions within the family, not just making immediate decisions to dispose of or sell them. Carnext has a system in place to consult about old cars, cars that have been driven for a long time, or cars with concerns about their condition. We believe that understanding the value and procedures of the car in advance can be a trigger for family discussions when considering how to handle parents' cars.
