As consumers become increasingly conscious of where their food comes from, origin verification is gaining importance in the food and beverage industry as a hallmark of quality.

According to a 2023 consumer trends survey by the Japan Finance Corporation [※1], among 11 pieces of information related to agricultural products, interest in "origin information" ranked fourth at 70.5%, following taste (78.0%), storage methods (72.7%), and ways of eating (71.5%). This figure surpasses interest in "use of pesticides" (69.3%), highlighting that origin information serves as a key indicator for assessing quality and safety.

In the same survey conducted in 2024 (Reiwa 6), "origin of raw materials" ranked highest among both men and women, with over 60% prioritizing it on processed food labels—surpassing even expiration and best-by dates [※2].

Additionally, a 2023 paper published in the academic journal 'Food Policy' emphasized the significant role of food origin in consumer decision-making, noting that origin labeling often functions as a proxy for quality [※3].

Origin verification is a core factor driving global demand for California Prunes. Grown across more than 40,000 acres spanning the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, California Prunes are the product of an ideal growing environment, established rigorous agricultural and food safety standards, and, above all, generations of skilled grower expertise.

Esther Litton-Elliott, Global Marketing and Communications Director at the California Prune Board (CPB), which represents 400 growers and 25 handlers, explained:

"It's the precise techniques practiced on farms and in processing facilities that form the foundation of why California Prunes are so highly valued by both the industry and consumers. For consumers, it's the flavor, large size, and culinary versatility. For the industry, it's the consistent product quality and reliable year-round supply that underpin this reputation."

For food manufacturers, retailers, and foodservice operators, origin verification carries meaning beyond simply indicating where a product is grown. It serves as a testament to consistent product quality, proven reliability, and dependable supply capacity built over time. Backed by long-established grower expertise and production practices, the name "California Prunes" continues to meet the rising demand for trust and reassurance among buyers and consumers alike.

Looking at California itself, the state leads the U.S. in cultivating a wide variety of specialty crops, producing over three-quarters of the nation's fruits and nuts, nearly half of its vegetables, and approximately 40% of the world's prunes.

The state boasts over 170 years of history as a premier plum-growing region, with its origins tracing back to the legendary 'Petite d’Agen' variety. This cultivar was brought to California in the mid-19th century during the Gold Rush era by French horticulturist Louis Pellier.

Today’s growers cite California’s nutrient-rich soil, advanced production techniques, and responsible management practices as key reasons for the global success of California Prunes. Across the industry, they agree that the true "secret" lies in a shared commitment to delivering premium-quality prunes.

Ranbir Singh, a prune grower based in Marysville, stated:

"California’s soil contains nearly everything needed to grow specialty crops, and a culture of responsible, safe food production is deeply rooted here. We are committed to growing food that is as safe and secure as possible."

Courtney Ferris Taylor, a prune grower from Yuba City, added:

"Some may credit the soil, others the sunshine. But ultimately, it comes down to the passion of the growers. The reason California Prunes are loved is because of the dedicated farmers who treat agriculture as a life’s passion and pour their enthusiasm into producing high-quality fruit."

Unlike other plum varieties, California prunes fully ripen on the tree without fermenting. Growers carefully monitor fruit firmness and sugar levels to determine the optimal harvest window. Mechanical tree shakers are used for harvesting, and the fallen fruit is caught on fabric-covered frames—minimizing damage and ensuring the plums never touch the ground.

After harvest, high-throughput optical sorting technology further ensures quality by identifying and removing foreign materials, pits, and damaged fruit. Approved prunes are then washed, sorted, and arranged in single layers on specialized racks before entering temperature- and humidity-controlled tunnel dryers.

All California Prunes are processed using 100% tunnel-drying methods, ensuring uniformity in shape, texture, sweetness, and moisture content. After drying, the prunes are stored in refrigerated facilities at packaging plants, undergo rehydration and quality inspections, and are then packaged on a made-to-order basis before being shipped to nearly 80 countries worldwide.

While harvest is a short, intensive period, orchard management and tree care are year-round responsibilities. Growers meticulously manage tree structure to ensure each tree produces fruit with the desired size, sugar content, and flavor profile.

Behind the scenes, the California Prune industry continues to invest in research, innovation, and technology to ensure it can sustainably deliver premium prunes to the market for generations to come.

With harvest just a few months away this year, Esther concluded:

"California Prune growers have spent generations refining their expertise in cultivation and drying. From managing fruit load per tree to consistently achieve ideal size, high sugar content, and rich flavor, to maintaining rigorous standards throughout drying and packaging—every stage meets exceptionally high demands. It is the strength of the 'California' origin brand and our industry’s unwavering attention to detail that gives buyers confidence in California Prunes and provides consumers with peace of mind at the point of purchase."
