A 1988 sports watch adorned with an 18K solid gold bezel
PRINCIPE PRIVE - Epoca d’Oro, a vintage watch boutique renowned for its discerning curation of timepieces from the 1940s to the 1990s and highly acclaimed by watch collectors and fashion enthusiasts worldwide, has received a new arrival: the ZENITH Epervier 18k Gold Bezel 1990s.
'Epervier' (pronounced 'eh-pehr-vyay').
In French, this means 'Sparrowhawk'—a name that reflects the model’s design ethos of agility and strength. As a sports watch, it features practical details such as a rotating bezel, screw-down crown, and high water resistance.
At the heart of this timepiece lies the legendary automatic chronograph movement 'El Primero,' unveiled by ZENITH on January 10, 1969. Revered in the history of mechanical chronographs, El Primero later served as the base movement for the Rolex Daytona Ref.16520, earning global acclaim for its exceptional precision and reliability.
In the late 1980s, as mechanical watches began to show signs of revival after the quartz crisis, ZENITH expanded beyond chronographs to focus on practical, high-performance sports watches. The Epervier collection emerged as one of its most symbolic lines.
The quiet yet undeniable presence of an 18K solid gold rotating bezel
The model presented here, Ref.19.130.492, is a luxury sports watch combining a stainless steel case with an 18K solid gold rotating bezel. Its dazzling white lacquer dial exudes elegance, while the contrast with the gold bezel creates a refined and sophisticated presence.
The case features a screw-down case back and screw-down crown, ensuring excellent water resistance. Additionally, a soft-iron inner case enhances anti-magnetic properties. The movement is the self-winding Cal.49.2, a ZENITH-modified version of the ETA Cal.2892-2. Despite its slim profile, it delivers high reliability and stable accuracy, making it an outstanding timepiece for everyday use.
A design that balances sportiness with elegance, preserving the distinctive atmosphere of the 1980s.
This watch embodies an era when mechanical timepieces were reclaiming their value after the quartz shock. As a passionate expression of ZENITH’s vision during this transitional period, it encapsulates the brand’s technical mastery and philosophy in a single masterpiece.
