The Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art (Kanazawa City) will hold a special exhibition titled 'Wajima-nuri: Passing on Lacquer Culture to Future Generations' from Saturday, June 27, to Sunday, August 2, 2026. Wajima-nuri, created through nearly 30 production processes from wood base to decoration by numerous skilled artisans, has been preserved by nearly a thousand craftsmen in the Wajima region. The major earthquake on New Year's Day 2024 and subsequent heavy rains dealt a severe blow to Wajima-nuri, but two and a half years later, a new form of revival is beginning to stir in Wajima. This exhibition highlights the production processes of robust and elegant Wajima-nuri and introduces the 'baton relay of skills' that connects these advanced techniques.
