AMATORA SPA, a Kyoto-based provider of "hair wellness," will begin offering a unique, Japan-exclusive head spa experience inspired by Ayurveda starting in April 2026. The sessions will take place in "Chadokoro Kanza," a silent space located within the grounds of Imakumano Kannon-ji Temple in Kyoto.
Imakumano Kannon-ji is a temple long cherished as the "Kannon of the Head." We have secured this quiet space within the temple grounds for the exclusive use of our guests, where they will receive a head spa treatment performed by a licensed cosmetologist.
While enveloped by the nature of Kyoto, guests will have their mind and body restored through a combination of herbal extracts and hair oils tailored to their dosha, along with massage techniques that leave hair smooth, glossy, and flowing. A moment to enjoy matcha and Japanese sweets is also provided after the treatment.
This is a supreme ritual that satisfies the five senses and awakens your inner radiance.
Testimonials "Even though it's the same scenery, the way I see it has changed."
During the treatment, guests wear an eye mask and receive care focused on the head, neck, and shoulders while surrounded by the sounds of birds and rustling trees. Many have reported that when they open their eyes after the session, the natural scenery viewed from Kanza looks different than it did before the experience.
In recent years, interest in wellness tourism has grown globally, with experiential travel focused on restoring the mind and body gaining significant attention. Kyoto, in particular, is highly regarded internationally for its Zen and temple culture, as well as its aesthetic of living in harmony with nature. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for experiences that allow people to face themselves in silence.
AMATORA SPA has previously offered Ayurveda head spa experiences utilizing Japanese beauty techniques at its salon in Shijo Karasuma, Kyoto. To provide an even more uniquely Japanese experience—a time to restore the mind and body within an environment characteristic of the ancient capital—we are launching this new experience at "Chadokoro Kanza," a silent space within the grounds of Imakumano Kannon-ji.
Experience Details "Kanza" is a term representing the Zen principle of "calming the mind and sitting quietly."
By receiving an Ayurveda-inspired head spa while enveloped in the sounds of birds and wind-swept trees, guests are provided with a time to release daily thoughts and tensions, restoring balance to the mind and body. After the treatment, guests can spend a relaxing time in the Kanza space enjoying matcha and Japanese sweets.
The "Gochi-sui" (Five Wisdom Water) used is drawn from a well said to have been created when Kobo Daishi struck the ground with his ritual implement. This water, long cherished as sacred, is used to prepare the matcha.
About Imakumano Kannon-ji Temple and Chadokoro Kanza Imakumano Kannon-ji is a historic temple located in Higashiyama, Kyoto, and is the 15th temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.
