Pixie Dust Technologies, Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Chairman: Yoichi Ochiai; President: Taiichiro Murakami; hereinafter PxDT) has installed the real-time translation subtitle display "VUEVO Display" at "Hakata Maiko Chaya Wanokageidokoro Wanokatsura no Omote" (operated by Hakata Geidokoro Wanokatsura), a traditional performing arts experience facility in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. "Wanokatsura no Omote" is a popular cultural experience spot for inbound tourists where they can experience traditional performing arts rooted in Hakata, such as Japanese dance, shamisen, tea ceremony, and ozashiki games, along with Japanese cuisine. With this installation, the facility has realized a customer service environment where staff who cannot speak English or other languages can interact face-to-face with visiting tourists without being conscious of language barriers. "VUEVO Display" translates spoken words in real-time and displays them as subtitles on both sides of a transparent display. Its greatest feature is that staff and tourists can converse naturally while facing each other across the display, observing each other's expressions, gestures, and movements. In about three months since the introduction, the facility has provided service to tourists from 17 countries across Europe, America, Asia, Northern Europe, Eastern Europe, and Africa. Staff have reported that they can now respond to visitors from any country without hesitation, and that they have experienced the "joy of normal conversation" rather than just using a translation machine, which has contributed to improved store ratings.
