SSFF & ASIA 2026 Reveals Lineup of ~250 Films; Features AI Program and Immersive Art Experiences

The Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA) 2026, one of Asia's largest international short film festivals accredited by the Academy Awards®, officially announced its lineup of nominated and special screening works on its website today and launched ticket sales. Under the theme of 'Cinema Engineering,' the festival will showcase approximately 250 of the latest short films selected through diverse curations such as 'Cinematic Tokyo,' 'Women in Cinema,' and 'Shibuya Diversity,' in addition to competitions in the Live Action, Non-Fiction, and Animation categories, where winners earn eligibility for next year's Academy Awards nominations and the George Lucas Award (Grand Prix).

Key highlights for 2026 include the 'Culinary Program: Memories of Food,' connecting universal values through a culinary lens, and the 'Art Program,' where visitors can experience animation, dance, music, and fashion in a traditional Japanese tatami room at MoN TAKANAWA. Special screenings feature highly anticipated Japanese premieres, including 'Sandiwara' directed by Sean Baker and starring Michelle Yeoh, the horror film '4:44 Horror Time' starring Onew from SHINee, and Charlie Kaufman's poetic work 'Opening the Door to the Blue World.'

The Japan Category includes 'mopim,' a virtual production work starring Joe Odagiri and Kasumi Arimura, and 'Dead or Alive Pass,' written by Akutagawa Prize winner Naoki Matayoshi. The festival also features an increased focus on the 'AI Program,' showcasing short films produced using artificial intelligence, highlighting the cutting edge of visual technology. SSFF & ASIA 2026 invites audiences to explore the five senses through film, with programs designed to inspire not just vision, but sound, touch, and smell.
