Osaka Sealing Printing Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tennoji-ku, Osaka; President: Tadashi Matsuguchi), a core company of the OSP Group that provides one-stop manufacturing of seals, labels, film products, paper packaging, and promotional tools, will add "Treeloop Thermal™," a thermal paper that uses biomass-derived color formers in part of its color-developing raw materials, to its product lineup from May 21, 2026.

Color formers, which are materials for thermal paper, generally use petroleum-derived raw materials. This product is an environmentally friendly product that replaces a part of these with lignin color formers using kraft lignin. Kraft lignin is a component contained in black liquor (blackish-brown waste liquid) generated when pulp is extracted from wood. By utilizing waste liquid as a raw material, it achieves upcycling and further reduces environmental impact by decreasing the use of petroleum-derived color formers. Furthermore, this product does not use bisphenol A, which is prohibited by overseas regulations, or bisphenol S, which has usage restrictions, in its color formers, thus aiming to strengthen sales not only domestically but also overseas.

Development Background There was a demand for thermal labels made of kraft paper to match the atmosphere of natural and environmentally conscious products. However, there were challenges such as the warm, unique texture being lost when a thermal layer was applied to kraft paper, or clean printing being difficult due to the rough surface. To overcome these issues, development of this product was initiated. The product has a feel equivalent to general white thermal labels and has been commercialized as a light brown, natural-toned label.

Benefits of Cost Reduction and Waste Reduction In the thermal transfer method using ink ribbons, ribbon costs and the disposal of film ribbons after use are issues. However, with direct thermal printing like this product, ribbons are unnecessary, which can significantly reduce costs and waste. Additionally, the elimination of ink ribbon replacement work improves operational efficiency.

OSP Group's Environmental Initiatives In recent years, with environmental conservation being emphasized, interest and needs for CO2 emission reduction, plastic reduction, and reduction in the use of petroleum-derived raw materials are increasing. The OSP Group is committed to developing environmentally friendly products from the perspective of SDGs to meet the needs of the times in response to societal changes. This productization is also part of that effort.
