Our company supports 'April Dream,' an initiative to make April 1st a day for sharing dreams. This press release represents the dream of Oomugi Kobo Roa Co., Ltd.
Background of the Dream: In the United States, the FDA has approved health claims for barley foods, stating that they can 'lower blood cholesterol' and 'help prevent heart disease and diabetes when used to improve dietary habits,' which has brought significant attention to barley.
In Japan, barley was long a staple food, but due to the rapid Westernization of diets after the war, production has plummeted to 1/20th of its peak. Our goal is to re-evaluate this traditional Japanese health food by processing barley into a wide range of products, from sweets to bread and noodles, making it widely and easily accessible to improve the health of the Japanese people.
Efforts to Date: We have developed numerous products using 100% domestic barley, without using any wheat.
Future Initiatives: The number of farmers cultivating barley is steadily declining. The expansion of abandoned farmland due to the aging of farmers is considered one of the causes of the 'Reiwa Rice Crisis.' In 2017, we established the agricultural production corporation 'Oomugi Kobo Agri' to regenerate desolate, abandoned farmland into barley fields. We then use the harvested barley to produce a variety of barley sweets.
