IR Technical Education Institute will hold a public seminar to organize the current status of PFAS regulations, learn about the impact on fluorinated materials including PVDF-based binders, and the direction of alternative technologies.

The European PFAS regulation, which garnered significant attention with public comments in 2023, is continuing its formulation process. PFAS is a regulation that covers an extremely wide range of materials, and if the regulations are concretized, impacts are expected across diverse industrial fields such as batteries, automobiles, electronic materials, chemicals, and manufacturing.

In the field of lithium-ion batteries in particular, the handling of fluorinated materials, including PVDF-based binders widely used as cathode binders, has become an important theme concerning future material selection and development policies. On the other hand, regulatory trends differ by country and region, requiring specialized understanding to organize related information and grasp practical impacts.

Course Outline

This seminar will organize the content and current status of PFAS regulations and explain the possibilities of regulations and trends in alternative materials for battery materials.

Furthermore, regarding PVDF-based binders used as cathode binders, it will cover not only the impact of PFAS regulations but also technical perspectives to keep in mind when considering material changes, such as the movement towards non-PVDF, the rise of LFP cathodes, and water-based coating.

Seminar Program

Current Status of PFAS Regulations - UN Situation - European Regulations - US Regulations - Japanese Regulations

Impact of Regulations on Battery Materials - PFAS Applicability of Lithium-ion Battery Materials - Candidate Alternative Materials and Manufacturers

Impact on PVDF-based Cathode Binders - Movement to Switch from PVDF Beyond Just PFAS - What Can Be Seen from Toyota's Roadmap - Rise of LFP Cathodes and Water-based Coating

Target Audience

Those involved in the lithium-ion battery industry who wish to understand the trends in PFAS regulations.

Those interested in regulations and switching trends for PVDF-based binders.

Those handling fluorine compounds who wish to organize past regulatory trends and future outlook.

Those involved in R&D, material selection, technology planning, quality assurance, and business development for battery materials.

Those who wish to confirm trends in alternative technologies for fluorinated materials and water-based coating.
