NEXER Inc. and Nacel Electronics Co., Ltd. conducted a survey on the acceptance of biometric authentication (facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, etc.) targeting 500 men and women nationwide.
The survey was conducted online from May 22 to May 28, 2026.
Regarding experience with biometrics, 30.2% said they use it daily, and 14.8% said they use it occasionally, totaling 45.0% who use it regularly. Meanwhile, 40.6% said they have never used it.
Among those with experience, the most common usage scenario was 'smartphone unlocking' at 74.7%, followed by 'PC login' at 8.9%, 'office/workplace entry/exit' at 4.0%, and 'cashless payment/shopping' at 3.6%.
When asked about their impression of biometrics compared to keys, cards, or PINs, 36.0% said they find it 'convenient', and 23.0% said they find it 'futuristic/advanced', totaling 59.0% with a positive impression. On the other hand, 16.4% said they feel 'somewhat anxious', and 24.6% said they have 'reservations', totaling 41.0% who harbor some anxiety or resistance.
Regarding the perceived increase in safety and convenience if biometrics were used for building/facility entry, 15.2% said it would 'greatly increase', and 39.8% said it would 'somewhat increase', totaling 55.0% with a positive evaluation. 26.6% said it would 'not change much', and 18.4% said it would 'rather decrease'.
As for facilities where they would like to see biometric entry management expand, 'condominiums/apartment complexes' topped the list at 47.2%, followed by 'offices/workplaces' at 33.8%, 'hospitals/medical facilities' at 30.0%, 'schools/educational facilities' at 22.4%, 'public facilities (city halls, libraries, etc.)' at 22.2%, and 'commercial facilities/accommodations' at 21.0%.
