On July 17, 2026, Taiwan's stock market experienced a 'Black Friday' plunge, dropping 2,953.71 points—the largest single-day closing decline in history. However, according to Cmoney data, six of this year's most popular actively managed Taiwan stock ETFs outperformed the broader market, and eight performed better than the heavyweight TSMC. The top three most resilient funds were all high-dividend ETFs: the newly listed Active First Financial High Dividend (00408A-TW), Active Allianz Taiwan High Yield (00984A-TW), and Active Nomura Taiwan High Yield (00999A-TW). In contrast, the highly popular 00981A and 00991A funds fell sharply by 7% to 9%.
On the 17th, Taiwan's stock index closed down 2,953.71 points, a 6.47% decline, ending at 42,671.27 and breaking below the quarterly line. The drop was primarily driven by a sharp fall in U.S. stocks and selling pressure on semiconductor chip stocks. TSMC, the market leader, also fell 180 NT dollars, a 7.29% decline.
Chang Cheng-chung, portfolio manager of the Active First Financial High Dividend ETF, analyzed that Taiwan's stock market has entered a period of intense volatility, mainly reflecting profit-taking after strong gains this year amid global market turbulence. He noted that the selling pressure has been significant, leading to a heavy market decline. However, the fundamental outlook for Taiwan's stock market remains unchanged, and global tech stock momentum continues. With valuations higher than before, the current correction is a natural pullback after a rally. Investors should watch for clear signs of stabilization. Additionally, high-dividend stocks such as telecom, financials, and traditional industries showed relatively stronger resilience.
With market volatility expected to increase in the second half, stock selection has become much more difficult. Chang advised investors who are concerned about short-term volatility but remain optimistic about Taiwan's long-term outlook to use this correction as an opportunity to review their portfolios and gradually invest in actively managed Taiwan stock ETFs that pursue both growth and dividend income.
Given that daily swings of over 1,000 points have become the new normal for Taiwan's stock index, investment portfolios should include assets that offer both growth and income. This strategy not only captures growth momentum in the next upswing but also creates a downside protection buffer through dividend income—a better investment choice amid current high volatility.
