Apple (AAPL-US) and Nvidia (NVDA-US) faced off in a dramatic market cap battle on Friday (17th), as Apple briefly overtook Nvidia to become the world's most valuable company. However, the rankings quickly flipped back, highlighting the ongoing tug-of-war for investor capital between the two tech giants.

At one point during trading, Nvidia's stock dropped about 3%, reducing its market cap to approximately $4.84 trillion, while Apple reached around $4.88 trillion, briefly taking the lead. Nevertheless, market volatility soon reversed their positions once again.

The two companies have shown markedly different stock performances this year. Apple's shares have surged 22% year-to-date, significantly outperforming the broader market. Investors are optimistic about Apple Intelligence, agentic AI, and future product pipeline developments. Additionally, Apple's low capital expenditure model has become increasingly attractive as corporations continue heavy investments in AI infrastructure.

Moreover, HSBC upgraded Apple's rating to 'Buy' this week, citing ongoing AI feature enhancements and the company entering its most innovative product cycle in recent years as key catalysts for future stock appreciation.

In contrast, Nvidia, the leader in AI chips, has seen its stock rise only about 7% this year. Recently, market capital has begun shifting toward the next phase of AI data center development, focusing on memory, storage, and infrastructure, benefiting companies like Micron (MU-US) and Sandisk (SNDK-US).

Nvidia has held the top spot in global market capitalization since overtaking Microsoft (MSFT-US) in June 2025, and was the first to cross the $5 trillion threshold in October of the same year. Apple also broke the $4 trillion mark that same month, driven by strong iPhone sales. The renewed battle for the top position underscores how, amid the AI investment boom, capital continues to rapidly rotate across different beneficiary sectors.
