OpenAI officially announced the full rollout of its GPT-5.6 series on Thursday (9th), alongside the launch of ChatGPT Work, a general-purpose AI agent tailored for office environments. This update signifies OpenAI's transformation from a simple chatbot into a 'super app' platform capable of cross-application operations.
GPT-5.6 Model Family: A Leap in Efficiency and Cost
The new GPT-5.6 family includes three models: flagship Sol, balanced Terra, and cost-effective Luna. CEO Sam Altman emphasized that the Sol model improves token efficiency by 54% in AI agent coding tasks. In benchmark tests, Sol performs on par with competitor Claude Fable 5, yet its average cost per task is only about a quarter of the latter. This efficiency gain stems from the model’s ability to self-generate and execute lightweight programs in memory, enabling more precise tool coordination.
ChatGPT Work: A Fully Automated 'AI Digital Employee'
ChatGPT Work is the centerpiece of this release, positioned as a digital employee capable of working continuously for hours and handling complex tasks. It breaks free from the limitations of traditional chat interfaces, directly connecting to Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, and enterprise databases.
With the new 'Scheduled Tasks' feature, ChatGPT Work can automatically scan messages in workplace communication tools, extract key information into PowerPoint or documents, and even autonomously schedule meetings and coordinate resources.
Super App Integration: The Disappearance of Codex and Computer Use Capability
OpenAI has officially merged its standalone Codex application into the new ChatGPT desktop app—the company’s largest product restructuring since March 2026. The new desktop version features 'Computer Use' capability, allowing it to perform physical operations on a user’s computer in the background, such as dragging files across folders or categorizing notes within local software.
Additionally, users can invoke specific app plugins by typing '@', enabling ChatGPT to directly access external tools’ context.
Sites Feature: Instantly Turn Ideas into URLs
Also launched is the public beta of the Sites feature. With just one command, users can transform work outputs or data analyses into interactive web applications or websites, generating a dedicated URL for team sharing. This offers significant convenience for real-time data dashboards, project trackers, or product prototype development.
Government Regulation and Market Dynamics
Notably, the release of GPT-5.6 was briefly delayed due to U.S. government security reviews. Altman stated that the company closely collaborated with the Department of Commerce and the National Cybersecurity Director, receiving full clearance only after resolving security concerns.
OpenAI’s valuation has now reached $852 billion, and the company is considering launching an IPO next year, continuing its competitive race against Anthropic, Meta, and SpaceX in the AI arena.
