The comfort zone refers to the range of thoughts and behaviors that people unconsciously feel "safe and secure" in, such as familiar tasks and human relationships. When living without particular awareness, due to the psychological homeostasis, people unconsciously try to stay within this area. However, it is also true that as long as one remains within this range, significant growth or changes from new challenges are unlikely to occur.

A survey by Mizukara in August 2025 targeting business professionals, "Correlation between Work/Life Goal Setting and Happiness," revealed that only 60% of people set GOALs (targets) in their work, while the remaining 40% work without targets. The low labor productivity in Japan is a recognized issue, and it may be natural that productivity does not increase if people work vaguely without goals.
The level and quality of goal setting also vary greatly among individuals. Only 1 in 10 people (10.6%) spontaneously set high GOALs (targets) "outside their current reality" that are difficult to achieve, while the majority adopt a passive stance, such as those who set a safe line that is "achievable with normal effort" (20.4%) or those who simply adopt numerical targets handed down by the company (12.8%). Conversely, this means that by spontaneously setting high GOALs (targets) "outside your current reality," you can become one of the top 10% of talented individuals.
Correlation Coefficient Between Job Satisfaction and Happiness is 【0.47】, a High Correlation
Furthermore, a survey conducted by Mizukara from August to October 2025, "Correlation Coefficient of Happiness and Job Satisfaction," revealed that the correlation coefficient between job satisfaction and happiness is 0.47, indicating a "very high correlation." The correlation coefficient is an index that expresses the relationship between two factors, quantifying "the degree to which one factor increases when the other also increases."
This correlation coefficient of job satisfaction (work engagement) and happiness, 【0.47】, indicates a high correlation level comparable to that between smoking and lifespan. For example, while "income and happiness" might seem highly correlated, the actual correlation coefficient is only 【0.09】. Also, research reports indicate that the correlation coefficient between "work-life balance in work and health status" is 【0.28】. This means that the correlation coefficient of 0.47 for "job satisfaction and happiness" is higher than various other factors generally considered to have a high correlation.
In other words, the more fulfilling one's daily work is, the higher one's overall life happiness becomes. According to a "Happiness Survey" conducted by Harvard University in 2025, Japan's happiness level ranked lowest among 22 countries. This, along with low labor productivity, is a national challenge for Japan. However, by becoming passionate about work through setting GOALs (targets) outside one's current reality, there is a possibility of simultaneously solving various problems such as productivity and happiness.
