The AI platform for procuring mechanical parts, "meviy" (provided by Misumi Group Inc.), will expand the standard sizes of flat bars and add new compatible surface treatments in its CNC milling (squared parts) service starting May 18, 2026. This expansion broadens options for the frequently used thicknesses of 3mm, 4mm, and 4.5mm, enabling it to meet needs such as corrosion and wear resistance, appearance, and insulation.

■ Background

Flat bars are steel materials with a rectangular cross-section standardized in width and thickness. They are highly versatile materials that can be used simply by cutting them to the required length. Because there is no need to machine the entire surface, machining time and manufacturing costs can be kept down, making them popular across a wide range of fields. In particular, plate thicknesses of 3mm, 4mm, and 4.5mm can secure necessary and sufficient rigidity in areas where extreme precision is not required, so they are used in a variety of situations such as equipment parts.

Furthermore, because they are widely distributed in the market as JIS standard materials, many requests had been received for meviy to support equivalent sizes. In addition, there were numerous voices from customers wanting to select surface treatments suited to their applications and usage environments, such as trivalent chromate and hard chrome plating to enhance corrosion and wear resistance, or anodized processing to meet appearance and insulation needs.

In response to these requests, flat bars will now be available in thicknesses of 3mm, 4mm, and 4.5mm, along with new selectable surface treatments including trivalent chromate white, hard chrome plating, hard white anodize, and white anodize matte. Consequently, for applications such as support bars for bundling wiring, brackets for mounting sensors, and reinforcement plates for equipment frames, the options for flat bar sizes and surface treatments will be expanded, making it easier to procure parts according to the specific application and usage environment.
