The theme 'Development and Commercialization Promotion of a Prototype for a Compact Long Duration Energy Storage System, "Carbon-Air Secondary Battery System",' jointly applied for by the research group of Professor Manabu Ihara (Assistant Professor Keisuke Kameda, Researcher Kentaro Matsunaga) of the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Technology, Institute of Science Tokyo (President: Naoto Ohtake), and Mirai Creation Investments (President: Masayuki Okada) as co-representatives, has been selected for the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) 'Deep Tech Startup International Expansion Program (D-Global)'. For this theme, Mirai Creation Investments will accompany as the commercialization promotion agency, aiming for the commercialization of the technology and the founding of a startup.
About the Selected Theme
[Principal Investigator]
Manabu Ihara, Professor, Department of Chemical Science and Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Technology, Institute of Science Tokyo
[Commercialization Promotion Agency]
Mirai Creation Investments Co., Ltd.
[Selected Project Name]
Development and Commercialization Promotion of a Prototype for a Compact Long Duration Energy Storage System, "Carbon-Air Secondary Battery System"
[Overview of the Research Theme]
By socially implementing the 'Carbon-Air Secondary Battery System,' which utilizes the Gibbs free energy difference from the reaction between carbon and carbon dioxide for charging and discharging, the project aims to establish a startup that will transform the energy system by supplying cheap, decarbonized power derived from renewable energy in urban areas.
Comments on the Selection
Manabu Ihara, Professor, Department of Chemical Science and Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Technology, Institute of Science Tokyo
"The 'Carbon-Air Secondary Battery System (CASB System)' that we aim to commercialize in this project charges and discharges using an operating principle and mechanism different from conventional storage batteries. It is the world's first energy storage system that utilizes the simple oxidation reaction where carbon reacts with oxygen in the air to produce CO2 for charging and discharging electricity. It has the features of 1. Safety, 2. Compactness, 3. Low cost, and 4. Stable product supply, possessing overwhelming superiority as LDES (Long Duration Energy Storage) for storing large amounts of power for long periods at a constant charge/discharge rate. Towards strengthening carbon neutrality and energy security, we aim for its commercialization as a compact, large-capacity storage battery system originating from Japan that can expand the ratio of cheap variable renewable energy power sources in the future. Furthermore, by collaborating with the intelligent energy system 'Ene-Swallow®' business being developed separately, we will maximize the value of the CASB system."
Masayuki Okada, President and CEO, Mirai Creation Investments Co., Ltd.
"Against the backdrop of societal decarbonization, the energy storage battery market is expanding globally, and its importance is further increasing in Japan from the perspectives of realizing a decarbonized society and economic security. Under these circumstances, we believe that Professor Ihara's CASB system, as a Japan-originated technology possessing both uniqueness and competitive advantage, can greatly contribute to global decarbonization. Taking this selection as an opportunity, we will fully support it as a commercialization promotion agency to further accelerate its social implementation and commercialization."

What is the 'Deep Tech Startup International Expansion Program (D-Global)'?
The 'Deep Tech Startup International Expansion Program (D-Global)' aims to create deep tech startups that possess the potential to generate significant social and economic impact and achieve substantial business growth, including international expansion, based on technological seeds from universities and other institutions. To achieve this objective, the commercialization promotion agency responsible for business development of the technological seeds and the principal investigator responsible for research and development become co-representatives. Under the project management of the commercialization promotion agency, commercialization milestones and R&D milestones are set, and both parties work together to advance the project.
