At the 'JECA FAIR 2026 – 74th Electrical Construction Exhibition,' held at Tokyo Big Sight from Wednesday, May 27, 2026, for three days, Sumitomo Electric Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Osaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Shin Tani, hereinafter 'Sumitomo Electric') exhibited the 'THE REBORN LIGHT smart for LEO,' a standalone power smart pole for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication. This product combines MIRAI-LABO Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Hachioji, Tokyo; President and CEO: Toshio Hiratsuka, hereinafter 'MIRAI-LABO')'s autonomous smart streetlight 'THE REBORN LIGHT smart' with satellite communication services.

A New Solution for Off-Grid Areas

Standalone Power Smart Pole 'THE REBORN LIGHT smart for LEO'

In mountainous regions and remote islands where it is difficult to establish power and communication infrastructure, issues such as 'wanting to contact someone but unable to connect' or 'wanting to check local conditions but unable to do so' occur daily.

Especially during disasters, securing communication means is directly linked to confirming safety and understanding the situation, making the presence or absence of a communication environment significantly impact regional safety.

However, in such areas, the cost of establishing commercial power sources and communication networks is high, making it difficult to introduce new equipment.

Responding to these needs, Sumitomo Electric and MIRAI-LABO jointly verified and realized the solution 'THE REBORN LIGHT smart for LEO,' which combines MIRAI-LABO's autonomous smart streetlights with LEO satellite communication services, enabling communication even in off-grid areas.

Features of THE REBORN LIGHT smart for LEO

In addition to establishing communication environments, flexible system configurations are possible by combining with optional devices according to installation conditions.

'THE REBORN LIGHT smart for LEO' is a 100% renewable energy smart streetlight that operates autonomously using only solar energy, without relying on any commercial power source.

Electricity generated from solar energy is stored in batteries repurposed from used EV batteries.

Furthermore, by utilizing this stored electricity to operate LEO satellite communication services, it is possible to establish communication environments even in areas where commercial power or communication infrastructure is not available.

Additionally, the stored electricity can be used as an emergency power source, capable of charging up to approximately 300 smartphones. It can also be integrated with devices such as surveillance cameras, enabling flexible system configurations tailored to usage purposes and installation environments.

Future Developments

Sumitomo Electric will begin sales of 'THE REBORN LIGHT smart for LEO' and actively propose it as a new solution for areas where establishing power and communication infrastructure is challenging.

We provide end-to-end services from on-site surveys to design, construction, and inspection, offering optimal implementation plans tailored to customers' challenges and installation environments.
