The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is implementing the "Absorption/Removal Carbon Credit Creation Promotion Project" in collaboration with startups to promote the creation of carbon credits generated by absorbing and removing CO2 using natural resources within the city. We are pleased to announce that carbon credits derived from agricultural land in Tokyo have been issued under a demonstration project adopted in fiscal year 2024.
Carbon credits are certified by third-party organizations for the amount of CO2 emission reductions or absorptions achieved through measures such as introduction of energy-saving equipment or forest management, enabling trading among companies. This is an effective mechanism for promoting decarbonization.
About the demonstration business operator: Feger Co., Ltd. Address: 0 Club, 3rd Floor, Shin-Otemachi Building, 2-2-1 Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo Established: July 7, 2022 (Reiwa 4) Representative: Representative Director Takahiro Ishizaki Aiming to realize sustainable agriculture (agriculture that achieves environmental consideration, profitability, and productivity), the company promotes climate change countermeasures in agriculture using the carbon credit system.
Overview of the demonstration project: Demonstration proposal for visualization and functional enhancement of the effects of biochar application to agricultural land to promote carbon storage. Quantification of the effects of biochar application on farmland and demonstration of productivity improvement through addition of functionality to biochar, aimed at expanding voluntary and continuous biochar application by farmers (demonstration ended December 2025 – Reiwa 7).
About the certified credits: Credit type: J-Credit Applicable methodology: AG-004 Biochar application to farmland Amount certified: 2,617 kg-CO2 equivalent (limited to Tokyo farmland) Implementation locations: Machida City, Hachioji City, Tokyo, etc. Photo of biochar spreading (Hachioji City) - In collaboration with local farmers, demonstration cultivation tests were conducted for onions in Machida City and for komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach), red turnips, etc., in Hachioji City. The partnership with these local farmers will continue for future credit model construction. - The business operator will continue to expand participating farmland in Tokyo under the "Carbon Credit Creation Support Project Utilizing Program-type Projects" of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aiming to create approximately 20,000 t-CO2 of credits by the end of 2033. The planned 20,000 t-CO2 through this project is equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 5,643 standard Japanese households.
Project overview: Open recruitment and selection of startups with excellent ideas and technologies for CO2 absorption/removal in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors, providing support such as expense coverage for demonstration projects toward creating absorption/removal carbon credits in Tokyo over two years.
Support details: (i) Expense coverage for demonstration projects (up to 40 million yen over two years) (ii) Accompanying support by a project promoter
[Reference] Carbon Credit Creation Support Project Utilizing Program-type Projects In collaboration with economic organizations and financial institutions with extensive networks among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Tokyo, the project operates "Program-type Projects" under the national J-Credit system, providing result-based collaboration funds to support operators working on credit creation from reduction/absorption activities of SMEs in Tokyo.
What is a Program-type Project? As an initiative that enables even smaller reduction activities to be converted into carbon credits, it is now attracting attention nationwide.
