Japan Medical Association and Yomiuri Shimbun Launch 10th 'Life-Gazing Photo & Essay' Contest; Top Prize 300,000 Yen

The 'Life-Gazing Photo & Essay' contest, co-hosted by the Japan Medical Association (JMA) and The Yomiuri Shimbun, is celebrating its 10th edition this year. Entry submissions began on June 3, 2024, with a deadline of Friday, October 2, 2024.

The contest consists of two categories: a Photo category and an Essay category. The Photo category includes a 'Division for Elementary, Junior High, and High School Students.' The Essay category has a 'Division for Junior High and High School Students,' and for elementary school students, there are separate 'Upper Grades Division' and 'Lower Grades Division' to make it easier for younger students to participate.

For the Photo category, the contest seeks works that convey the preciousness of life or capture moments of life's brilliance (subjects can include people, animals, nature, etc.). For the Essay category, eligible topics include interactions with doctors and nurses during illness or injury, stories about family care or the birth of a life, 'letters of gratitude' to doctors or nurses who have provided care, and for doctors (including medical students), the inspiration or episodes that led them to become a doctor. For the elementary school divisions, essays about daily experiences that made them feel the importance of life are also welcome.

At the awards ceremony, winners will have the opportunity to hear judges' comments on their works, which is designed to be helpful for future writing or photography. Since the 9th edition, the contest has added the 'Tokio Marine & Nichido Award' for the Photo General Division and the 'Tokio Marine & Nichido Anshin Life Award' for the Essay General Division, increasing the chances of winning. With a top prize of 300,000 yen, the organizers encourage broad participation.
