Zenpokoenfun Inc. recently held an on-site explanation session for its 'Taketa-style Kofun Tomb' at Noda Hotaru Rose Garden in Noda City, Chiba Prefecture, with CEO Tsuneyasu Taketa personally leading the event. Held in four sessions starting at 10:00 AM, each session reached full capacity, welcoming approximately 130 attendees in total. The event reaffirmed the growing nationwide interest in 'Kofun tombs'.

The 'Taketa-style Kofun Tomb' is a modern communal and perpetual memorial grave that faithfully recreates the keyhole-shaped burial mounds (zenpokoenfun) of Japan's Kofun period, based on academic research conducted with archaeologists, Shinto scholars, and architects. It features two types of burial: 'perpetual ancestral graves' with individual interments on the surface sections, and 'collective memorial graves' with shared interments in the front chamber (karō). The entire kofun functions as one large communal grave, quietly standing in Noda, Chiba. Pet interment is also possible.

During the sessions, CEO Tsuneyasu Taketa personally explained on-site how keyhole tombs spread across Japan and discussed the historical and cultural significance of kofun culture. As a historian and scholar of Japanese culture, Taketa carefully conveyed to attendees the meaning and appeal of the 'Taketa-style Kofun Tomb,' which revives the burial practices of the pre-Buddhist (pre-538 CE) Kofun period as a purely Japanese cultural tradition.

The kofun tomb at Noda Hotaru Rose Garden is the company's first and landmark project. Authentic design elements are incorporated throughout, such as tombstones using the 'rammed earth construction method' from the Kofun period. The 'syncretic Shinto-Buddhist' prayer tradition—where Shinto priests perform Shinto rituals and Buddhist priests conduct Buddhist memorial services during the biannual Mitama Festival (around spring and autumn equinoxes)—will be passed down here for generations.

The company is reimagining graves not merely as posthumous resting places, but as community spaces that connect people before death. Under the motto, 'If we’ll be friends in the afterlife, why not while we’re still alive?' the company hosts 'Kofun Alumni Reunions' for contract holders, helping transform end-of-life planning into a positive and forward-looking experience. Over 8,000 people nationwide are currently considering purchasing a grave.

Zenpokoenfun Inc. will continue to deliver the 'Taketa-style Kofun Tomb,' which connects Japan’s unique views on life, death, and prayer to the modern era, to people across the nation.

What is the 'Taketa-style Kofun Tomb'?

The 'Taketa-style Kofun Tomb' is a modern communal and perpetual memorial grave that faithfully recreates the keyhole-shaped burial mounds of the Kofun period, based on academic insights from archaeologists, Shinto scholars, and architects. It revives the burial system of the pre-Buddhist (pre-538 CE) Kofun period—a purely Japanese cultural tradition—into a one-of-a-kind modern grave.

Authentic Design: Modeled after 3rd-century Yamato (Nara Basin) kofun. Features such as tiered construction, moats, stone paving, and stone chambers are recreated to build an authentic keyhole tomb.

Careful Syncretic Rituals: During the biannual Mitama Festival (around spring and autumn equinoxes), Shinto priests perform Shinto rituals while Buddhist priests conduct Buddhist memorial services. No successor is required; management fees are paid in full at contract signing, and all cleaning and rituals are handled by the cemetery.

Industry-first and Japan-first ease of purchase: Purchase a grave online through the 'Kofun no Madoguchi' website with the same ease as online shopping (this is the first time in Japan that grave purchases are fully completed online). Credit card and installment payments are supported.

Pre-death community: Hosts 'Kofun Alumni Reunions' for contract holders. Most contracts are made during life, and customers have shared feedback such as 'I’m starting to look forward to dying.'
