Yahoo! JAPAN ID to Unify Login Method to Passkey for Enhanced Security and Convenience

LINE Yahoo Corporation (hereinafter, LINE Yahoo) will unify the login method for Yahoo! JAPAN ID to "passkeys" to achieve safer and more convenient logins. As a first step, password-only logins are scheduled to end by around spring 2027. Starting today, users who log in only with a password will see guidance on setting up "passkeys" or SMS authentication on the login screen. As a transitional measure to passkeys, passwordless login using SMS authentication and login combining a password with a one-time password will be available for the time being. LINE Yahoo will gradually unify to "passkeys" based on future migration status.

In recent years, cyberattacks targeting authentication information, such as phishing scams, have continued to increase across society, making the transition to safer and more convenient login methods a critical issue. For Yahoo! JAPAN ID, LINE Yahoo has been promoting the transition to passwordless logins, such as SMS authentication and passkeys, since 2017, with the aim of improving user safety and convenience. Currently, approximately 90% of logged-in users use passwordless login, and about 60% have set up passkeys.

"Passkeys" enable secure and convenient logins using biometric authentication on smartphones and PCs. Once a user registers a "passkey," they can log in to Yahoo! JAPAN ID more securely and smoothly using the device's biometric authentication. Biometric authentication is performed on the device, so user biometric information is not transmitted or stored by LINE Yahoo.
