The acclaimed alternative theater group PSYCHOSIS will stage playwright Takatori Ei's masterpiece historical drama 'Shinsengumi IN 1944' at Zamza Asagaya.

A bold premise: the late Edo-era loyalists, the Shinsengumi, accidentally enter Nazi Germany during World War II, clashing across time and borders. With a playful, comic-like sensibility and a unique perspective that shines light on the weak hidden in history's shadows, this work premiered in 1999 and remains a popular favorite, fully showcasing the charm of playwright Takatori Ei's works.

Alongside the iconic Shinsengumi members, key figures of the Nazi regime, a boys' choir, and even Kurama Tengu appear. The story rapidly unfolds, freely traversing the two eras—late Edo and Nazi Germany.

Shinota Hiroki (Mikami Kaito) plays Hijikata Toshizō, the protagonist who confronts the Nazis across time, while Terada Yumi portrays Ai Lane, the heroine who controls space and time. Kuniyuki (PSYCHOSIS) takes on the dual roles of Okita Sōji and Karin, a Romani woman who shares Okita's face, while Haraguchi Risa (pipi stellero) plays Hans, a boys' choir member tormented by a harsh fate due to his Jewish heritage.

Music is handled by Nagashima Hiroyuki, a frequent collaborator with PSYCHOSIS, and his band Dowser. Their one-of-a-kind sound, created using vintage synthesizers and modern audio technology, enhances the stage production.

Director Morinaga Rika commented, 'Last year, we focused on dark works, but for this piece, I want to embrace casualness and pop sensibility. I aim to portray the Shinsengumi in tracksuits—whether they're fighting or just brawling—and the Nazis spreading irrational terror, in a thrilling yet cruel manner.'

■ Synopsis

1864, Ikedaya. The Shinsengumi suddenly find themselves in Nazi Germany, 1944. Waiting for them in Berlin is Nazi Propaganda Minister Goebbels. In response to his cold ambition to manipulate history, Ai Lane, appearing across time, attempts to shift fate alongside the Shinsengumi.

In an era of modern weaponry where swords are obsolete, and amid the horrifying reality of the Holocaust, what will Hijikata Toshizō and Okita Sōji see in this foreign land, and for what purpose will they fight?
