Nagoya Television Business Co., Ltd. will present Arthur Miller's masterpiece "Death of a Salesman" from Friday, July 24, 2026, to Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Tokai City Arts Theater Grand Hall (1016 Ota-machi Shimohamada, Tokai City, Aichi Prefecture (within Yu-nal Tokai)). A Masterpiece by Arthur Miller Depicting the Final Two Days of a Man Once Renowned as a Skilled Salesman, Leading to His Death

This work, published in 1949 by Arthur Miller, a leading figure in American contemporary theater known for "All My Sons" and "The Crucible," depicts the struggles of an aging salesman and his family desperately trying to avoid alienation in an American society fueled by consumerism. Upon its Broadway premiere, the play garnered significant acclaim, running for 742 performances. It received numerous prestigious awards that same year, including the Tony Award for Best Play, the Pulitzer Prize, and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. Furthermore, it won the Tony Award for Best Revival in 2012. The play was adapted into films twice, in 1951 and 1985, generating considerable buzz.

The role of the protagonist, Willy Loman, has been passed down through generations by acclaimed actors such as Lee J. Cobb in the original Broadway production, Dustin Hoffman, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It is a cornerstone of modern drama, having been performed by numerous renowned actors in Japan as well. The cruelty of the social system depicted in the play is a universal reality, and issues such as competitive society, family breakdown, and the frustration of youth are fundamental societal problems. Therefore, this work, with its universality, continues to pose questions to us living in the present day.

STORY

Willy Loman was once a renowned and skilled salesman, but now, past the age of 60, his former brilliance has faded. His two sons, who seemed destined for bright futures, are over 30 and still unable to become independent. His wife, Linda, devotedly supports her husband, but there seems to be no light of hope within the family. Willy, who believed that being a salesman was the ideal job to achieve his dreams, finds himself ruthlessly left behind by the changing times. What path will Willy, clinging to his convictions, choose for his family, and above all, for himself?
