## Picking Up Notable International Works!

## 'Tiger of Malaya - Harimao'
From laughter to inquiry -- The theatrical world of popular Singaporean playwright Alfian Sa'at finally arrives in Japan!

**How can history be performed 'correctly'?**
**A remake of the 'Harimao' myth by Singaporeans and Japanese**

In 1943, during the war, a propaganda film 'Tiger of Malaya' was produced in Japan. Tani Yutaka, known as 'Harimao (Tiger),' became a chivalrous thief in British Malaya, stealing from wealthy Chinese and British to give to the poor, and worked as a spy for the Japanese army during World War II. This sharp and comical theatrical work follows the process of remaking the film, which was originally performed entirely by Japanese actors, with actors from Singapore and Japan.

The actors, with different nationalities, languages, and experiences, strive to perform history 'correctly' with their own sense of urgency, but their interactions are somewhat absurd. Who should play whom, and how, to be correct? Various 'correctnesses' endlessly miss each other...

Alfian Sa'at theatricalizes themes that are difficult to discuss even in multi-ethnic, multi-lingual Singapore, such as identity, history, and politics, with a unique humor, drawing Singaporean audiences into a whirlwind of bittersweet laughter. In this work, written to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Teater Ekamatra, the popular playwright who continues to run at the forefront of multi-ethnic, multi-lingual theatre, uses intense irony to twist the audience's minds and bodies in multiple layers.

Produced by: Teater Ekamatra
Co-hosted by: The Japan Foundation

## **'Qui Som? - Who are we?'**
Baro d'evel, a performance group centered on contemporary circus that is attracting keen attention in Europe, comes to Shizuoka with a much-talked-about work!

**The Body Speaks, Laughter Opens -- The Stage of Baro d'evel**

Bodies fly through the air as if forgetting gravity, and the stage space transforms one after another before the audience's eyes -- 'Baro d'evel' is a company formed in 2000 by members from different fields, including French and Catalan circus artists, actors, dancers, musicians, and ceramicists. Starting from circus, their large-scale stages, where laughter and tension, precariousness and beauty appear simultaneously, have fascinated many people and are now gathering intense interest.

**The question 'Who are we?' posed by the body, beyond words**

This work, making its Japan premiere, is the first in a trilogy on the theme of ceramics and caused a great sensation when it premiered at the Avignon Festival in 2024. Various objects such as clay and pottery change shape, and the 12 artists of different ages and backgrounds lightly leap over frameworks like nationality, language, and race to depict 'living together' with their bodies. Acrobatic circus movements, dance, and humorous moments that bring a smile to your face overlap, and before you know it, time flows as if in a dream... The experience of awakening our deep-seated senses gives us a small courage to face the chaotic world and step forward together into the 'world to come'.
