Overall Results for Desired Fields of Study: Web Design is Most Popular at 74.4%

When asked "Which fields do you want to learn (multiple answers allowed)?", Web Design was the most selected field overall at 74.4%, followed by Graphic Design (45.4%), Programming/HTML/CSS/JS (23.0%), and Video (20.8%).

Field Composition Varies Greatly by Age Group

While Web Design appears dominant overall, the composition changes significantly when broken down by age group.

In their 20s, interest is concentrated in Web Design (77.7%) and Graphic Design (51.0%), with Video at only 16.2%. In their 30s, interest in Video rises to 23.6%, an increase of 7.4 percentage points from their 20s.

Changes are particularly significant from the 40s onwards. In their 40s, Web Design drops to 65.2%, while Video sharply increases to 38.9%. In their 50s, Video (49.2%) is nearly on par with Web Design (55.6%), with about half showing interest in video.

Web Design was the most chosen field across all age groups, but interest in video steadily increased with age, nearly reaching parity in the 50s.

Why Do Chosen Fields Differ by Age? Motivations Revealed Through Examinees' Voices

Reading the free-response answers to "Reasons for interest in this field" revealed that motivations for learning differ greatly by age group.

20s Choose Fields Based on "The Person I Want to Become"

Motivations are centered around aspirations for design careers and career development. For those in their 20s, choosing a school can be seen as an "investment to get the job they want."

[Voices from the 20s]

"I've been interested since I was a student, and my desire to do it didn't disappear after I started working."

"When I re-evaluated my career plan, I realized I wanted to do Web Design long-term."

"I was looking for work I could do from home to prioritize my family."

30s Learn as an "Extension of Their Current Job"

Many aim for "skill expansion into adjacent fields" rather than a complete career change to a different industry. A characteristic learning intention is the "two-sword style," extending into graphics and programming with Web Design as the core. Cases where structural changes in the industry, such as transitioning from print design to Web Design, push them to consider schools are also observed.

[Voices from the 30s]

"I want to add it as a plus to my current work and use it for a career change."

"I'm working in UXUI design but lack graphic design skills."

"I only have experience with Illustrator and want to learn the current mainstream methods."

40s/50s Prioritize "What Can Be Used Immediately at Work"

A commonality is having specific requests like "I want to create this." The motivation for learning is primarily to improve existing work rather than career advancement. The higher interest in video and graphics among those in their 40s and 50s compared to those in their 30s and younger is likely an expression of the demand to "output results quickly."

[Voices from the 40s/50s]

"I need video editing skills for my job."

"I was asked by an entrepreneur I support to be able to create Instagram Reels."

"I'm involved in photography for work, but new staff with no experience joined, so I need to learn and refresh my own skills."

"I'm in my 40s and feel my sense of style has become outdated."
