At the end of February 2026, military clashes between the United States, Israel, and Iran led to the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial chokepoint for energy transport in the Middle East. Japan relies on the Middle East for approximately 90% of its crude oil imports. This blockade affects not only gasoline and electricity prices. Many housing materials, such as insulation, piping, and paints, use "naphtha," a product derived from refining petroleum, as a raw material. As the procurement of naphtha begins to falter, a direct impact on housing materials is starting to emerge. Impact on Housing Materials In response to concerns about naphtha supply, major chemical manufacturers (such as Mitsubishi Chemical, Mitsui Chemicals, and Asahi Kasei) have successively announced production cuts for their ethylene plants. Consequently, housing material manufacturers are also moving towards price increases.
